Highlights
- From the Bond Collection of Historic Motorcycles
- Restored and completely rebuilt in 2015
- Unused and untouched historic racer in superb condition
- Will require light recommissioning prior to use
The Appeal
This 200cc Triumph Cub racer was bought from Ireland in 2019, and amongst the paperwork there are handwritten references to Joey Dunlop and the Triumph Cub that he competed on at the start of his career. The Dunlop website does say that he competed on a Cub bought with borrowed money at his first race.
It appears that no records were kept of frame or engine numbers so we have no idea if this Cub was built as a replica of that bike, or whether it was ever owned or raced by Joey Dunlop. An interesting conundrum that its new owner can have all the fun of investigating!
History and Paperwork

- Purchased and became part of a collection of competition bikes in 2019
- Photographs of bike as purchased from Ireland
- Exhibited at various Classic Motorcycle shows
- Invoices for various parts to complete the build in 2020
- B&W images of Joey Dunlop on a similar Triumph, circa 1969
- Notes of engine specification and parts used
- Bought by the Seller in 2020 as part of the collection
The Condition
- Green painted tank, mudguards etc all in good condition with no damage
- Black painted frame in excellent condition
- Visible frame and engine numbers
- Clean and presentable light alloy wheels
- Unused Dunlop tyres
- Race exhaust
- Correct Triumph badging in good condition
- Period 10,000rpm rev counter
- Racing saddle, black with white piping
Upon close inspection the Triumph is in excellent condition, as fresh as the day it was completed. There is no visible damage and all the painted and alloy parts remain in exceptional condition.
The Mechanics
- 200cc Cub engine
- Large valve head
- 9:1 compression ratio
- Dellorto carburettor
- T20SHGearbox
- Ultra close gear ratios
- Roller big end
- Race cam
- Simplex primary drive
- Alloy fuel tank
- Braced frame
On the day we visited we did not attempt to start the Triumph, as it is quite likely that it hasn’t been run for several years, and perhaps it has never been run at all!. The above spec is based on notes in the history file and invoices for parts bought when some finishing was carried out to complete the build in 2015. Whether the spec remains the same remains to be discovered.
Summary
This is a beautifully built Cub racer that the new owner can have the fun of recommissioning. If the build spec remains the same as documented in the paperwork then we are sure it will be quick and entertaining to ride. There will also be the challenge of investigating if this Cub was ever owned or raced by Joey Dunlop, which would of course have positive effect on its value!
