THE APPEAL

With a completely new look to the previous MG TF model in 1955, the MG A was a breath of fresh air to the MG lineup. With its sleek lines and sports car looks, it made its debut in the 1955 Le Mans 24 Hours. Finishing 12th and 17th, enthusiasts worldwide took a liking to the new MG A, which resulted in over 101,000 being produced. However, of the 101,000, approximately 6,000 were for the UK market, and the rest were for export.
This lovely example of the British classic has benefited from a complete restoration in 2009, and two years ago, there was a new floor fitted. On the mechanical side of things, the vendor believes the MG A to have the original mileage of 26,632 miles. In addition, some recommissioning work has been carried out to ensure everything is in good order and ready to be enjoyed.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • Registered 1st June 1989
  • Manufactured 1957
  • V5 is present
  • Restored in 2009 by Simon J Robinson Classics
  • A new floor was fitted two years ago
  • Substantial history file
  • Original registration book
  • Original owner’s handbook
  • British Heritage Trust factory Certificate
  • Just 3,500 miles covered in 16 years

THE INTERIOR

  • Retrimmed tan leather seats
  • Well presented
  • The instruments are working correctly
Inside the MG A is a lovely place to be. The seats and door cards were retrimmed in tan leather several years ago and are in excellent condition. There are some very light scuff marks on the door cards, which are inevitable getting in and out of the low-slung two-seater.
The dashboard fascia has also been replaced, possibly at the time of the retrim. The wooden fascia is in excellent condition with no signs of crazing or cracking to the lacquered finish. The instruments are reported to work correctly, with the odometer showing a reading of 26,632 miles. The switchgear and heater controls have a small amount of wear to the lettering on the buttons, which is in keeping with the age of the MG.
The carpets are in excellent condition. Inside, the boot is nice and clean. The spare wheel is present along with the jack, both in matching covers.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Full body restoration in 2009
  • Excellent brightwork
  • Refurbished wheels
Finished in what's considered the Orient Red, the MG A presents extremely well. The car was treated to a full restoration in 2009 by Simon J Robinson Classics. At the time of the restoration, it had covered just 24,088 miles. There are some minor chips, as you would expect to see on any vehicle which was repainted 13 years ago.
Starting at the front of the MG, the brightwork is in excellent condition with minimal tarnishing, and the headlights and spotlights are in good condition with no cracks to the lenses. Further up, the bonnet has an equal panel gap, and the windscreen frame is in good condition, as is the windscreen, which looks free of any scratches.
Around the MG A's curvy flanks, the car is nice and straight, with no apparent dings or dents to notice. The chrome door mirrors are in good condition, and the doors align as they should.
At the rear, the bumper is in good order with just a small amount of tarnishing, and the light lenses are free from splits or cracks. The gasket between the lights and body has started to perish but would be a readily and easy item to replace. A welcomed addition for a weekend away is the luggage rack attached to the boot lid, which is in good condition.
The original wire wheels have been powder-coated with a chrome finish product and are in good order with no corrosion. The tyres are all matching, with a good amount of tread remaining.
There is a vinyl roof included, along with side screens. Both are in good condition with no splits in the roof or the plastic rear windows.

THE MECHANICS

  • Reconditioned 1600 engine, which has covered approximately 2,500 miles
  • Four-speed gearbox
  • Well-presented engine bay
The MG has been fitted with a reconditioned engine, as noted on the paperwork supplied by Simon J Robbinson Classics. The dates and mileage suggest that the car has covered approximately 2,500 miles since the engine was fitted in 2009.
Recently the MG has been given a recommissioning, which has included spark plugs, coil and radiator. It fires up as it should without hesitation and sounds as you would expect, with no untoward noises. Fitted with a four-speed gearbox, the car is said to pull well through the gears, and the change is smooth. The brakes have been overhauled and bring the vehicle to a stop in a straight line as they should.
Looking at the underside, this is nice and clean. Two years ago, the floor was replaced, and it has then been given a layer of stone-guard to futureproof it.

SUMMARY

Probably one of the prettiest MG’s produced. The curvy lines and low-slung stance just shout-out style. Benefiting from a complete restoration in 2009, along with a reconditioned engine which has now only covered approximately 2,500 miles, this is a fantastic opportunity to sit yourself behind the wheel of a quaint British classic.
