The Appeal

One of Britain’s oldest motorcycle manufacturers, Matchless enjoyed success with various iterations of the G3 platform from the late 1930s on, until the company folded in 1967.
This 1963 G3LS 350 has been sympathetically upgraded with a 500cc barrel and piston, providing it with increased power and torque from its single-cylinder OHV engine. Besides this enhancement, it is a healthy and very original specimen. While many G3s have subsequently become scramblers or trials bikes, this one retains its original road going specification.

The History and Paperwork

  • V5C present
  • Original logbook
  • Ministry of Transport Test certificate dated 23rd May, 1969
  • Original registration number
  • Historic MOT / road tax status
  • Currently road registered

The Condition

  • Very original
  • Light patination
  • New rims and spokes
Having survived in its road going trim, this is a very original example of a G3LS, which retains its twin seat and additional foot pegs. The seat itself has likely been reupholstered at some point in time as it is in very plush condition.
The paintwork is in good order, with some areas evidently having been touched in at some point. The tank looks particularly smart, with a deep gloss finish. The mudguards are also very good and we particularly like the waterslide decal on the rear. The oil tank for the dry sump system and the tool box have a few blemishes, which have since had some paint rectification so as to avoid drawing in the eye. Overall, this Matchless is really smart and the light patination only adds to its charm.
The brightwork has survived very well and while the finish on the exhaust has deteriorated somewhat, the handlebars are in good condition. There is some crazing to some items including the petrol cap, but nothing that detracts at all from the overall look of the bike. The grips appear to be very old and possibly even the original items, so it comes as no surprise that the left hand one is a little split.
The vendor informs us that the rims and spokes have been replaced and the wheels look to be very smart indeed. The tyres are also new, evidenced by the whiskers which are still visible on them.

The Mechanics

  • Now fitted with a 500cc barrel and piston
  • Amal carburettor
  • Font and rear suspension
  • New clutch
  • New stainless steel rims and spokes
  • new tyres this is front and rear
The vendor informs us that this Matchless runs and rides really well indeed, benefitting from a recent new clutch and rear wheel bearing.
The 350cc engine has been upgraded using a 500cc barrel and piston. This enhances the bike’s performance considerably, while maintaining the original engine mountings.
We’re told that the bike starts really easily and runs smoothly. Out on the road this comparatively small bike is rewarding to ride and benefits from the added comfort of telescopic front suspension and ‘jampot’ rear shocks.

Summary

A charming original survivor that is something of a sleeper with its 500cc head and piston, this Matchless is a wonderful classic bike that is a true delight out on the open road.
