1957 Matchless G3L

Highlights

  • Period mechanical modification - fitted with a 500cc Matchless G80 piston and barrel
  • Custom styling bringing together modern and retro elements
  • Bespoke stainless steel gearbox cover, mudguards, oil tank, battery box and registration plate bracket

The Appeal

The great thing about motorcycle customisation is that you can make as many or as few modifications as you wish. Some bikes are unashamedly bespoke with striking paintwork and lashings of chrome, whereas others make a more subtle impression, with beautifully executed smaller modifications, focusing on the finer details.
This 1957 Matchless falls into the latter category and to the uninitiated, it may appear to all intents and purposes to be a totally standard ‘50s motorcycle. Those in the know will no doubt have spotted the modern solo seat and stainless steel adornments. Keen Matchless enthusiasts will note that where a 350cc single once thumped away, the barrel and piston from the Matchless G80 now sits, enlarging this bike’s capacity to 500cc.

The History and Paperwork

  • Started life as a 1957 Matchless G3L
  • Restored and modified, with recent paintwork and numerous bespoke parts
  • V5C present
  • The bike has covered 1,510 miles since the rebuild as is indicated on the odometer which was set to zero upon completion

The Condition

  • Recent restoration and customisation
  • Bespoke stainless steel battery box and oil tank are period correct modifications
  • Minimalist stainless mudguards akin to trial bikes and scramblers in period
  • Rear light and number plate bracket also hand-made from stainless steel
  • Resprayed tank continues to display the matchless winged badge
  • We couldn’t see any damage or wear to the recent paintwork
  • The frame looks to be in very good shape with no damage or corrosion
  • Modern solo seat complements some of the retro modifications
  • The wheels run straight and true, with good chromework
  • Benefits from modern tyre technology, offering superior roadholding to the original rubber
  • The Smiths speedometer is clear and works as it should
  • The handlebars present really well and there is little wear to be seen
  • All of the hand controls and footpegs are in good condition

The Mechanics

  • 500cc with a G80 cylinder head and piston fitted
  • Converted to 12 volt electrics with an alternator fitted
  • AMC gearbox and clutch
  • Aluminium clutch casing
  • Custom-made stainless steel gearbox cover
  • With little over 1,500 miles since being built, this bike runs and rides really well
  • The vendor does not report any running faults

Summary

If you’re in the market for a customised ‘50s motorcycle, this Matchless would be a great option.
A perfectly prepared concoction of retro and modern custom embellishments and with an uprated period powerplant, we love this interpretation of a classic British bike and we’re sure it will make a fantastic addition to someone’s collection.
