The Appeal

The 1950s were a time of intense standardisation in West Germany. The car market was dominated by Volkswagen to such an extent that almost every car on the market looked strikingly similar. The obvious result was that diversifying the market would attract more attention.
This was no doubt the strategy with Borgward Motors, which boasted distinctive, upfront profiles that were attractive and seemed to fuse the approach of every other market in the world - a little bit Italian, a little bit American, a little bit British. With super-compact proportions and a distinctive parallel twin engine, they were inexpensive and relatively bold compared to their contemporaries. Over 176,000 were built until Borgward’s (rather dramatic) liquidation in 1961.
This example was restored in 2001, and still looks to be in superb fettle - with an attractive, mid-century colour scheme and a comfortable, uneventful history.
