Pre-bids

1957 Land Rover Series I 109"

Highlights

  • Rare early 109
  • Full rebuild of the original 2.0-litre engine in 2022
  • Original paint with time-earned patina
  • Dry stored throughout current ownership and the previous owner's sixteen-year tenure

The Appeal

Rover continually experimented with the Land Rover's wheelbase throughout the decade that the Series I was in production. The earliest examples measured just 80" between the hub centres, then came the 86" and finally 88" variants. But Rover also envisioned a long-wheelbase Land Rover with additional carrying capacity, so a 107" chassis was devised in 154 which was later updated to 109" in 1956.

Here we have a pleasingly original example of an early 109 pickup from 1957. As you'll see in the photographs, it's a very original example that wears its years with pride. While it exhibits a rich patina, the "Birmabright" alloy bodywork looks impressively straight and so too the chassis appears in very sound order.

We must say, it's refreshing to see an example like this that hasn't been messed with. The vendor bought the Land Rover in 2017 in non-running order, so set about rebuilding the original 2.0-litre side valve engine and generally recommissioning the car. Now running, driving and ready to drive, with no need to pay road tax or pass MOT, this charming classic is ready for a new owner.

The History and Paperwork

  • Previous owner had the vehicle for sixteen years, throughout which it was barn stored
  • Brought by the vendor in 2017 as a non-runner and subsequently submitted to extensive recommissioning
  • Dry stored by the vendor during their tenure
  • Exempt from road tax and MOT; last voluntarily MOT tested in 2018

The Condition

  • We're informed that the patinated coat of Bronze Green paint is original to the vehicle
  • Retains remarkably straight bodywork for a Land Rover of this period
  • The vendor states the chassis is superb, and it certainly presents very well
  • The canvas tilt would reportedly benefit from replacement or repair
  • Totally original interior with very good seats
  • Period correct heater retained

The Mechanics

  • Factory standard 2.0-litre side valve four-cylinder engine
  • Four-speed manual gearbox
  • Selectable low-range and four-wheel-drive
  • Full engine rebuild in 2022 with new camshaft, followers, gaskets, etc
  • The vendor states it "purrs like a kitten" and always starts readily on the button
