1957 Chevrolet GMC 100 Series

Highlights

  • Only 18,328 miles from new
  • Very rare right-hand drive example
  • Imported from the dry climes of South Africa in May 2020
  • Stored in a heated garage and never taken out in the rain during current ownership

The Appeal

You wouldn't miss this thing going down the road.

This baby blue Chevrolet GMC 100 Series pick-up is pure '50s Americana at its best. Except all is not quite as it seems... Those eagle-eyed among you will have noticed this truck is right-hand drive, and that's because it was supplied new to South Africa. Not only is this perfect for British roads, it also means the truck has spent its life in a very dry climate. The condition speaks volumes for its preservation and you'd be hard-pressed to find another example anywhere near as good or original.

It's been completely restored to period specifications prior to present ownership, including full refurbishment of the suspension, chassis, and steering components, as well as a complete engine and transmission rebuild. The interior has been reupholstered, and the exterior paintwork looks stunning in this most distinct of colours.

For those seeking a '50s American pickup to enjoy on UK roads, this one's eminently worth of your serious consideration.

History and Paperwork

  • Ultra-rare right-hand drive example registered in 1957
  • Imported from South Africa in May 2020
  • Seven pages of genuine Chevrolet parts obtained from the USA
  • Very rare vehicle due to its originality; we're informed that it looks exactly the way it did when it left the Chevrolet factory in 1957
  • Purchased just over two years ago; the vendor was attracted to its amazing looks and condition
  • The vendor notes that it has been a real head-turner in the village and a great talking point at local car shows
  • Stored in a heated garage and never taken out in the rain by the vendor
  • Reluctant sale due to needing the garage space
  • Accompanied by numerous invoices and hand-written notes
  • Old South African paperwork and number plates present
  • V5C present
  • 18,328 miles indicated
  • Exempt from road tac and MOT

The Condition

  • Presents superbly throughout
  • The underside is especially smart with no signs of corrosion or even any notable road grime
  • Glossy, bright paint across all panels, complemented by copious chromework, which also looks in fantastic condition
  • The vendor notes that it would benefit from the of touch-up in places, but there's nothing especially noteworthy to report
  • Commendably straight bodywork and bed for a commercial vehicle of this vintage
  • The interior has been retrimmed to a very good standard and continues to look immaculate
  • Completely reupholstered bench seat, floor covering, and headliner
  • Stands out because of its original colour and chrome
  • A few electrical faults have developed, such as the fuel gauge and the horn not working, but the vendor assures us that everything else functions as it should

The Mechanics

  • 3.0-litre petrol straight-six
  • Three-speed column-shift manual gearbox
  • Reportedly in very good running and driving order
The mechanicals have been completely rebuilt, including:
  • Complete teardown and refurbishment of suspension, chassis, and steering components
  • Upgraded front and rear brakes - custom-fitted double diaphragm booster
  • Complete rebuild of engine and transmission
