The Appeal
MG had done well for itself, having found a strong export market for its T Series roadsters during those difficult early post-war years. By the early '50s, however, the MG TF, with its quintessentially '30s proportions and, to a certain extent, driving style, was beginning to look rather old-hat. Fortunately, the directors at Abingdon noticed MG was getting left behind, so they embarked upon a project so modern that it looked twenty years ahead of its predecessor.
Based on Syd Enever's streamlined TD Le Mans car, the new MGA featured cutting-edge aerodynamic bodywork. Rather than give the old XPAG engine yet another outing, MG opted for the more powerful B Series unit used in its Magnette saloon. The result was mightily impressive, and the MGA would go on to enjoy similar sales success to its T Series forebears, both of which were predominantly built in left-hand drive for overseas markets like the United States of America.
Not this 1956 Roadster though. This MGA 1500 is one of the rare original right-hand drive examples and also boasts a high-performance Derrington light alloy crossflow cylinder head.
The vendor tells us:
"I purchased the car in October 2013 as a barn find with no documentation or V5C. Over the next seven years, the car underwent a complete nut and bolt restoration, of which I have a full photographic record. The engine and carburettors were professionally rebuilt. All parts were either refurbished where possible or replaced, predominantly from the MG Owners Club or Moss Europe.
This car is not a Concours example, but it is pretty close. It starts and drives well and is a real head-turner."

With less than 1,000 miles covered since its restoration, this MGA still looks very sharp indeed. Modern upgrades such as a 123 electronic ignition system and a bespoke Maniflow exhaust system enhance its usability further.
It really does have everything going for it, so be sure not to miss out on this superb opportunity.
