1956 MG A

Highlights

  • This car enjoyed a bare metal respray 10 years ago and still looks fresh
  • Carefully dry stored when not in use
  • 1600cc engine with factory-fitted twin carbs
  • Lovely overall condition

The Appeal

Synonymous with great British sports cars, MG has made some of the most iconic cars of the 20th century. The MGA was quite a departure from the TF it was designed to replace with its delightfully streamlined shape. This one is in great overall condition and has been lovingly cared for over the years. It has benefitted from a full respray 10 years ago that still looks good. It is mechanically sound and is fit and ready to be enjoyed. It was imported back into the UK some years ago from the US and is now resplendent with all the controls and steering wheel on the correct side.

The History and Paperwork

  • The car has been in the keep of the present owner since 2015
  • Originally a US car that was repatriated and converted to right-hand drive
  • There has been a recent engine service
  • A valid UK V5c accompanies the car

The Interior

  • The seats have been professionally recovered
  • Tasteful colour-matched dashboard to exterior colour
  • Previously converted to RHD
  • Both door cards are in good condition
  • The floor carpeting is in a good serviceable condition and is protected by monogrammed mats
  • All the instruments are bright and clear as are all interior fixtures and fittings
  • The boot is clean and tidy and houses the matching spare wheel
  • A full tonneau cover accompanies the car

The Exterior

  • Finished in red that has a good level of gloss
  • Minimal imperfections to the paintwork
  • The current owner has replaced several pieces of chrome in recent years
  • The headlamps and light clusters all appear bright and clear
  • There is a well-fitting hood and a pair of side screens
  • The car sits on a set of original wire wheels with knock-off spinners that are in great condition
  • The underside has not been inspected, but the images obtained at ground level appear to show a copious amount of underseal applied and some chassis repairs

The Mechanics

  • The engine bay is clean and tidy and seems to be free of any coolant or oil staining
  • The 1600cc engine has enjoyed a recent deep service which included curing an oil leak and a full carb strip down
  • Electronic ignition has been installed
  • A new fuel tank has been fitted by the previous owner
  • A factory standard 4-speed transmission is fitted and works as it should
  • The suspension has benefitted from replacement bushes
  • The owner informs us that the car performs admirably and starts easily

Summary

Easy to maintain and a delight on the eye, MGA is a firm favourite for the classic owner. This one has enjoyed a life of being looked after by only a handful of UK owners. It was originally a US export and was blue. Once repatriated to the UK it was professionally changed to right-hand drive and the colour was changed to red.

That colour was retained again when it was fully resprayed 10 years ago. The current owner has kept the car garaged when not in use and has spent some time and effort in maintaining it mechanically. It lives on a trickle charger and is fitted with electronic ignition which ensures it starts promptly on the button. This little gem of a car is ready to be enjoyed by a new owner and even comes with wet weather protection should the sun refuse to shine.
