1956 Land Rover Series 1 88"

Highlights

  • Recent restoration
  • Historic vehicle
  • V8 engine fitted

The Appeal

Very little is known about this Land Rover series 1 as it doesn’t come with a great deal of paperwork to give any insight into the kind of life it’s led. What one can be certain of though is that these workhorses were built to last, and for a vehicle approaching 70 years of age, this one certainly looks in fine fettle.
At some point in its recent past, it’s believed to have been subject to a restoration and been fitted with a V8 engine making this one very capable machine. Importantly though, it still has bags of character and a wonderful patina that ensures it should generate lots of bidding interest.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in 1956
  • V5c present
  • Historic vehicle
  • A quick check at the MOT history on the DVLA website shows no record of any MOTs since 2005
  • MOT and tax exempt
  • 1 key

The Interior

  • The seats appear to have been recovered in green vinyl and are presented in good condition with just one small hole in the centre of the front seat
  • Two fixed rear benches in matching green vinyl appear in good condition
  • The dash appears to be largely unmodified and there is a wonderful patina about the cabin
  • Centre of steering wheel appears to be slightly damaged
  • All gauges appear to be in full working order with the exception of the speedometer, the mileage is therefore unknown and cannot be verified
  • Windscreen wiper motor currently doesn’t work on the passenger side
  • Glass appears nice and clear

The Exterior

  • The outside has been painted green in recent years and it’s a great job, making this Series 1 looks fantastic from any angle
  • There are a few imperfections to be found around the body as illustrated in the photographs, but nothing detracting from its overall appeal
  • ·Small paint bubbling in a few spots, noticeable on offside rear panel and to the front near one of the headlight surrounds
  • Wheels in good condition with a small amount of surface rust present
  • Full set of refurbished wheels in green also included with the car
  • Canvas roof fits well and is in good condition with no rips or tears
  • All terrain tyres appear to have good tread
  • A few scuff marks and small paint chips
  • Underneath has had anti-corrosion treatment at some point in its past
  • Tow bar
  • Lights all work and are free from any cracks or damage

The Mechanics

  • V8 petrol engine fitted
  • Functioning low range and 4x4 system
  • Gearbox in good order and selects gears as it should
  • All electrics reported to function correctly
  • The vendor advises that the car starts and runs and it should and reportedly drives as smoothly as you would expect from a 67 year old Land Rover

The Summary

The fact these are still seen around is testament to their durability and suitability to so many jobs. It may not come with a ream of paperwork, but while this might be a cause for concern with many other vehicles, it’s unlikely to cause any concern with those that know their Land Rovers. With the useful upgraded V8 engine, this is one vehicle that is willing to perform the toughest of tasks, and with its sympathetic light restoration, it looks fantastic too.
