  • Supplied with full (unused) weatherproof equipment
  • Collector's registration document present and exempt from MOT (pre-1960)

The Appeal

After the XK120 took the world by storm in 1948, its 1954 successor, the XK140, incorporated many improvements, including a redesigned cab, rack-and-pinion steering, better brakes and redesigned suspension. Its XK in-line six-cylinder engine even offered ten more horsepower than its predecessor, and buyers even had the option of an automatic gearbox!
This 1956 XK140 OTS manual transmission with matching numbers has undergone a full restoration by the UK specialists at Twyffords Moors. The vendor states that the vehicle runs very well, benefiting from its modified cooling system with booster tank and electric fan. A complete vehicle with a weather package, which the seller has never used as he only drives the car in good weather.
For Jaguar enthusiasts, this well restored and beautifully presented XK140 is undoubtedly a great opportunity.

The History and Paperwork

  • Certificate of origin present
  • Matching numbers
  • Originally sold left-hand drive with speedometer/odometer in MPH
  • Converted to right-hand drive during restoration
  • Collector's registration document
  • Exempt from roadworthiness tests (before 1960)
  • Acquired by the vendor in 2017
  • 70,357 miles (113,000 km) indicated (not certified)

The Condition

  • Good quality restoration
  • Bodywork well aligned and in good condition
  • No signs of accidental damage or corrosion
  • Fitted with aerodynamic rear wheel covers
  • Folding soft top and all-weather equipment offered in near-new condition
  • Chrome and paint finishes are very well preserved
  • Beautifully reupholstered red leather upholstery
  • No noticeable wear to seats, carpets or controls
  • Instruments and lighting appear to be in very good condition
Jaguar enthusiasts will undoubtedly appreciate the originality of this XK140, as apart from the cooling system upgrades and steering conversion, it remains extremely close to its original condition inside and out. Although the restoration took place some ten years ago, the car is still in excellent condition, with minimal signs of use and no obvious corrosion. The vendor reports no notable defects or problems with the cabin electrics.

The Mechanics

  • 3.4-litre twin overhead cam XK engine
  • Four-speed manual gearbox
  • Improved cooling system now incorporating a boost tank and electric cooling fan
  • Impeccable engine compartment
  • Indicated as being in good working order
The XK models didn't just look good, they really were, thanks to the all-new XK engine with twin overhead camshafts, designed by William Heynes. Reaching 190-200 km/h was easily possible, which was quite remarkable for the time, and the XK140 handled particularly well, incorporating several improvements over its predecessor - many of which were developed at Le Mans where Jaguar raced from 1951 to 1953.
According to the vendor, the car is a joy to drive, with apparently sound mechanicals and no apparent faults. Everything is in very good condition under the bonnet and the installation of the previously mentioned cooling system upgrades is very neat.
