1955 Mercedes-Benz Unimog type 401 Westfalia Frog-Eye Cab

Highlights

  • Fully restored to a high standard
  • Reupholstered in grey leather with contrast piping/stitching
  • Offered in full working order, reportedly running and driving really well

The Appeal

Like its close relative, the tractor, the first Mercedes-Benz Unimog began life without a roof. There was a rudimentary canvas soft top, but this would do little more than keep a light shower of rain at bay, not to mention lacking the ability to insulate the cabin in colder climes. Enter commercial vehicle experts Westfalia-Werke, who developed an enclosed cab for the Unimog in September 1953. Dubbed the ‘Froschauge’ which is German for Frog-Eye, this was the model that would go on to influence the future of Unimog design for decades to come.
This 1955 example has undergone an extensive restoration to an impeccable standard. As the photographs show, it’s in superb order for its age and the vendor assures us it’s in excellent running, driving order.
If you collect agricultural or commercial vehicles, this is surely a must-have. Alternatively, those in need of a highly capable vehicle for forestry or estate work could readily use this Unimog for its intended purpose. Even at seventy years old, it’s a supremely capable vehicle.
