THE APPEAL
The Matchless Motorcycle Company were one of the oldest British manufacturers dating way back to 1899. Later, under the AMC umbrella, the Matchless G9 and AJS counterpart, the Model 20, were introduced to the public at the Earls Court Motorcycle Show in 1948.
The 500 twin was quite innovative, and in competition form, proved successful in the hands of the works riders, and indeed inspired the development of the highly tuned and modified G45 race bike which first appeared at the Manx Grand Prix in 1951.
This handsome G9 touring twin was beautifully restored some time ago and still looks great. There are no details of the restoration but looking at the quality of the paintwork and fitting’s, it was skilfully carried out. Mechanically speaking, the recorded mileage indicates an (unconfirmed) engine rebuild which may have been undertaken around 2009.
This great British ’50’s motorcycle has everything going for it.
