1955 Ford Thunderbird

Highlights

  • Owned for nearly 20 years
  • Always garaged and serviced annually
  • Solid underside with minimal signs of wear

The Appeal

Perhaps one of the most iconic cars of mid-century American automotive design, the Thunderbird - or T-Bird as it's affectionately known - is a fascinating example of a luxury convertible. Intended as an alternative to the Chevrolet Corvette, the car was never promoted as a performance piece - though it was still quick on its feet - but instead offered top-notch levels of cruising comfort, something that it quickly found a niche for. You could go so far to say it felt distinctly European.
This particular example has been well-maintained, with regular servicing and a solid body that has stood the test of time. Loaded with pleasant patina and offering a truly distinctive drive, this car is sure to attract plenty of admiring glances. Pop on a cassette, leave the roof down and let the world go by - you'll soon be the centre of attention.

    • A couple of invoices

The Condition

  • Solid underside with minimal surface corrosion
  • Highly original with nicely-presented bodywork

  • Some patina to the brightwork
  • All branding is present and correct
  • Original branded wheels in fairly good order
  • Internally, the car is very original
  • Cassette player is missing its flap
  • Steering wheel could benefit from refurbishment
  • Clock is not working
  • Door cards could use some restoration
  • All instruments are legible with some light fogging
  • Carpets are looking a little tired

The Mechanics

  •  312 cu in (5.1 L) Y-block V8 powerplant
  • 3-speed Fordomatic automatic transmission
  • Electronic ignition has been fitted
  • Car starts, drives, shifts and brakes nicely
  • We've no reports of any mechanical issues
  • Drives well for its age
