Highlights
- 350cc 4-stroke engine
- Very original
- Later ‘Plunger’ rear suspension
The Appeal
Here is a very original-looking and appealing BSA B31.
It presents itself in what would appear to be a very original state. Part of a museum collection and now released for sale to make room for other exhibits.
Finished in deep red with a few chrome embellishments that carry some age-related wear marks that add to its charm.

The History and Paperwork
- Very original appearance
- Current V5c
- Currently on SORN
There is no appreciable paper history with this machine but it does possess a current V5c.
The overall condition is very good and is being released for sale by an automotive museum based in the north of England. It has been purchased as a fully functioning and running motorcycle so would require some light recommissioning before use.
The V5c states that the bike was declared new in 1955

The Exterior
- Original colour scheme
- Clean chrome work
- Some wear marks
- Minimal work required
The paintwork is in good condition and has retained a reasonable shine.
The chrome work looks bright and clean and there is no evidence of any accident damage.
There is the odd little scuff and age-related mark, in particular, on the transmission casing and around the controls but, this adds some authenticity to the machine and the bike presents itself well.

The Mechanics
- 350cc single-cylinder engine
- Front drum brake
- Rear drum brake
- Original wire-spoked wheels
This bike was taken directly from the display for the photo session so has not been heard running.
The museum has expressed that the bike was purchased by them in full running order and would suggest some minor recommissioning should be done before running the engine due to being on display.
However, the engine and all ancillaries appear to be in a good external condition without any meaningful oil leakage. The brakes also seemed to function normally during the photo shoot.

Summary
Although not heard running at the time of the shoot, the overall impression is that the bike is in a good original overall condition.
This machine represents a benchmark in post-war British motorcycle production.
It may have only generated 17bhp but was capable of a respectable top speed of 70 mph. More than enough on a bike with only drum brakes.
