The Attractions

Alfa Romeo has produced many attractive cars over the years and it would be very difficult to decide which is the best. But if there is one Alfa that deserves such distinction, it is surely the 1900 Super Sprint Touring coupé. Built for racing, the 'CSS' was a statement of intent, a car designed to show buyers that Alfa Romeo 1900s were both family-friendly cars and capable of excelling in competition.
Obviously, this sports car succeeded in its purpose. Designed by Alfa Romeo and built with Touring's lightweight Superleggera aluminium structure, the CSS regularly defeated all its competitors on the track. It was produced in two versions, and the Series 2 is recognisable by its more conventional floor-mounted gearbox. Only a few hundred were built and today they are highly sought after by collectors.
This '55 Series 2 was completely professionally restored to a very high standard some 20 years ago. It is evident that the greatest attention was paid to every detail - it even retains the double leather straps behind the seats to secure the luggage. The high quality of the restoration is confirmed by how well this car has been preserved in the intervening years, and today shows only a slight patina that gives it additional character. The work is verified by a series of independent certificates from ASI, CSAI, FIVA and CRS. It is also accompanied by an Alfa Romeo Certificate of Origin that confirms its provenance and verifies the serial numbers.
Presented in elegant dark blue with a two-tone interior, this car is definitely at the highest level a buyer could wish for.

Touring's modifications to the lines of the classic 1900 saloon have resulted in a car that is stylistically close to the production car but at the same time completely different. Built using the famous lightweight aluminium 'Superleggera' structure that was very much in vogue at the time, the Super Sprint is a masterpiece of design, characterised by clean, essential lines emphasised by refined styling solutions such as the slightly widened rear wings.
This car was restored 20 years ago and painted in dark blue, a rare and attractive alternative to the more common Alfa Red. It is a colour that suits the lines of this car particularly well and the paint finish is of a decidedly high standard.
The sensation of being in front of a very high level specimen is reinforced inside, where the blue and grey reupholstered cabin is carefully detailed. The quality is really high and the state of preservation is extraordinarily good, considering the age of the restoration.

The Mechanics

  • Alfa Romeo engine of 1.975cm³ developing 115hp
  • Two twin-body carburettors
  • 4-speed manual gearbox with floor shift
  • Mechanics rebuilt during the restoration and little used since then
  • No operating or driving problems reported to us
  • Car with matching serial numbers verified by various independent certification bodies
Beneath the elegant Touring bodywork lies one of Alfa Romeo's greatest treasures, the famous 1,975cm³ 4-cylinder engine of the 'TI Super' delivering 115hp. Using the mechanics of the saloon, the company could in fact correctly claim that the 1900 was a family car capable of triumphing in competition.
Series 2 cars like this one had a standard floor gearbox and are therefore particularly prized by collectors, especially those who intend to use their cars for top-level road and track competitions. We have been informed that the mechanics of this Super Sprint were rebuilt during the restoration and that it is a car with matching serial numbers. The seller has informed us that it runs properly and drives well, has no problems and requires no intervention.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
€0 to €9,999 €100.00
€10,000 to €49,999 €250.00
€50,000 to €99,999 €500.00
€100,000 + €1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
