The Appeal

Between 1936-55 the MG T-Type was the marques beautiful two-seater sports car. Through five generations the T-Type was slowly perfect until the final TF iteration was launched in 1953. It incorporated a few new features over the previous models. With new, faired in, headlights and radiator design it is a very good looking car.
This example has had an interesting journey, which we will get into during the next section, it now sits in amazing condition and is just waiting for you to hop in and enjoy all it has to offer.

The History and Paperwork

  • Rolling off the Abingdon production line in 1954 the next 70 years are very interesting
  • It spends some time in the UK before heading to America
  • When in America that car is barely used
  • Found a few decades later in a barn it starts its journey home
  • Before it comes over the mileage is recorded at only 31,603
  • This figure is believed to be original
  • Landing back on UK soil, in 2010, the car is sent to its new owner who starts the restoration
  • Keeping a comprehensive photo album of the re-build it is easy to piece together the work
  • The car was then stripped down to its frame
  • Its frame was then re-sprayed in black and new parts went back on
  • There weren’t any invoices for the re-build, however, it looks like a comprehensive rebuild
  • The tub is placed back on the car, and it is sprayed in this striking red
  • Upon completion of the restoration the car goes through an MOT
  • As it is now MOT-exempt the car hasn’t been through one since
  • Amongst the paper is the current V5, and some MG T-Type manuals/catalogues
  • It is now your turn to get behind the wheel of this well-restored classic

The Interior

  • Deep red interior
  • New carpets fitted during restoration
  • Presented in great condition
Upon opening the small, lightweight, doors you start to take in the beauty of this classic’s interior. Finished in a combination of deep red with black carpets it is an interior that looks stunning. If we start by looking at the two seats fitted in the cabin, we can see that they are in amazing condition. More than likely re-covered during the restoration in 2010 they haven’t experienced much use since. Due to only being used on special occasions the material on the seats is void of any marks, rips, or tears and ready to be used.
Stretching above the steering wheel and octagonal dials the vinyl-covered dash is in amazing condition as well with no cracks or other damage present. During the current ownership, the car has always stayed in the garage under a soft cover which has meant this dash has always been protected.
Carrying on the deep red theme the dash has been colour-coded to the exterior. This is then complimented by the ivory white instrument panel and thin-rimmed steering wheel. The dials set into the dash are all in amazing working condition. When the engine is running the oil pressure gauge shows a strong number and the water temperature is also displayed clearly. Looking below the dash we are presented with a well-fitted black carpet set. These dark carpets break up the colour nicely and also match the car's roof section.
Talking of the roof, just behind the seats you’ll find the compartment where the windows are kept snuggly when the roof is down, in here every window can be found. As you can see from the exterior photos, we did erect the roof during the photoshoot. A process that can become smoother with some practice it isn’t too difficult to put up. With the roof erected and secured in place, the interior can now be enjoyed even in the most British of weather.
Overall, the interior of this MG TF is in very good condition indeed. Thanks to the restoration and care of the current owner the interior does not need any work so you can just get in and start to enjoy it straight away.

The Exterior

  • Great paint condition
  • Vinyl soft-top works well
  • All exterior windows present
  • Chrome is very shiny
  • Comes with the obligatory picnic hamper
A classic MG really looks the part, doesn’t it? This example, presented in this stunning red, is a real looker that will get you noticed wherever you decided to take the car. Thanks to the restoration in 2010 this MG TF is in amazing exterior condition. If we start by looking at the paint in some detail, we can see that every panel is in very good condition indeed. Since it was resprayed in 2010 the car has covered about 1500 miles (all on dry roads), this lack of mileage has preserved the paint beautifully. Throughout the current ownership, the car has also been kept in a garage under a soft cover, further preserving the car's paint.
Matching the condition of the paint, the car's chrome accents all look amazing in the sunlight. Popping with reflections you could easily use the large chrome bumpers as a mirror. When the black vinyl is retracted it is hidden neatly under the well-fitting tonneau cover. Should you wish to erect the roof it doesn’t take too long. Simply pop off the tonneau cover, put the windows in place, and guide the roof into place. With it secured in place by the two interior wingnuts you now have a handsome-looking tourer. When the weather improves all, you need to do is reverse this process.
At each corner of the car, you will find a set of grey wire wheels. These are in lovely condition, and they are shod in a matching set of Toyo tyres. One final, more playful, exterior feature to mention is the picnic hamper that the rear. This will come with the car and has all of the utensils to make for a memorable lunch stop somewhere scenic.
Overall, the exterior of this MG TF is in beautiful condition. It is just waiting for you to display it with pride amongst your collection.

The Mechanics

  • 1.3L inline-four
  • Starts ‘on the button’
  • Low mileage
  • Numbers matching
  • The underside is in great condition
Under the bonnet of this MG TF, you’ll find an immaculately presented 1.3L in-line four with twin carburettors. It is clear to see that this engine has had some work completed during the restoration in 2010. On the day of the photos, the car fired into life and idled without any hesitations or stutters. It displayed good oil pressure on the interior gauge, definitely an encouraging sign. The car was then required to manoeuvre around the current owner’s drive, it completed this task with ease, slipping into first and reverse without crunching.
During the restoration, the body was removed, and the car's frame was re-sprayed black. Since this work the car has more than likely never seen a wet road, this has helped preserve the underside which still looks great today. The current owner has only used the car for special drives during their ownership but has never encountered an issue with the car's mechanical performance.
Overall, this MG TF appears to be in good mechanical condition and just waiting for you to get behind the wheel.

Summary

Restored to a very high standard a little over ten years ago this MG TF has since experienced limited use. This has preserved the condition of the car beautifully and as such you are about to get your hands on an extremely low mileage, numbers-matching, classic MG.
Just imagine being able to explore some of the world’s best driving roads behind the wheel of your new MG TF.
