1954 Land Rover Series I 86”

Highlights

  • Single family ownership since 1978 and just one former registered keeper
  • Recent new bulkhead, brakes rebuilt and rewire by marque specialist
  • Transferable dateless registration ‘RJH 840’
  • Beautiful time-earned patina inside and out
  • Highly original throughout

The Appeal

Land Rovers often become family heirlooms. Their rugged charm has a knack of working its way under your skin, so much so that their owners can’t bear to part with them.
This Series I is a case in point. It’s been in the same family since 1978, performing light duties including towing horse boxes, teaching two generations to drive and playing a starring role as a wedding car. Patina and Land Rovers go hand-in-hand and this one looks fantastic with some delightful age-commensurate wear to its Bronze Green paintwork
In recent years, the Landy has undergone a great deal of work with LPME  Motor Engineering in Watlington, Oxfordshire. The bulkhead has been replaced and the wiring has been comprehensively reworked for which there are several itemised invoices. Said to be driving well and ready to enjoy, this splendid Series I awaits a new custodian. Let’s hope they keep it for the next 46 years as the current owners have.

The History and Paperwork

  • UK market RHD example
  • In current family ownership since 1978
  • One former registered keeper prior to the current family
  • 39,600 miles indicated
  • Dry stored during recent years to preserve its condition
  • V5Cs present (old and new)
  • Desirable transferable registration ‘RJH 840’
  • Several recent invoices from LPME Motor Engineering
  • Collection of old MOT test certificates
  • Photographic record of recent work (see gallery below)

The Condition

  • Richly patinated Bronze Green paintwork
  • Commendably straight ‘Birmabright’ alloy panels with only light age-commensurate dents
  • Very smart canvas tilt in olive green
  • The various galvanised components continue to present very well
  • The front bumper has been overpainted and has taken a few impacts over the years
  • The chassis appears in sound order with some historic welding repairs and plenty of oil to keep it from corroding
  • New bulkhead recently installed
  • The rear crossmember appears sound and has been equipped with a tow bar
  • Some clouding to the plexiglass side windows as is not uncommon
  • The interior, controls and switchgear are suitably worn as you’d expect
  • Beautifully patinated upholstery without any major damage besides the material coming away from the rear face of the seat uprights
  • Period Smiths round cabin heater

The Mechanics

  • 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine
  • Four-speed manual gearbox with low-range and selectable four-wheel-drive
  • 86” wheelbase
  • Original-looking engine compartment
  • Rebuilt braking system
  • Wiring significantly overhauled
  • Driven sparingly and reportedly in very good driving order
  • We’re not informed of any known mechanical issues
