The Appeal
Bentley had big plans during the early 1950s, namely the ambitions ‘S1’ project. But Crewe desperately needed a new model to replace the successful yet now rather old MkVI, which had been in production since 1946. In short, Bentley needed a stop-gap, which materialised in the form of the R-Type - an evolution of the MkVI with just enough small revisions to make it appear like a fresh new model had arrived on the scene. The R-Type had a larger boot, subtly redesigned grilles and prated carburetion.
This 1953 example was ordered new by Mrs T Dean, of Heron Court, Farnham, Yorkshire. As the photographs show, it remains a very well-preserved example of the model, even down to its period Shell Grey over Tudor Grey two-tone colour scheme. The vendor informs us that the Bentley is accompanied by a vintage ‘Buff’ logbook, as well as a large history file dating back to the 1970s.
Exempt from road tax, MOT and ULEZ charges, this elegant post-war Bentley R-Type is ready to be enjoyed.
