The Appeal
The MG Midget TD is one of those cars that everyone adores because of its demure size, inherent cuteness and its stoic Britishness. You may find several throughout this site in various levels of condition and price, but if you are interested in a TD that is ready to go and one that has been beautifully restored so that all you need do is turn the key and enjoy, then this is the car for you. Finished in delightfully glossy red with a matching deep red interior, this is already a trophy winner as well as a winner in our hearts and needs a closer look.
The History and Paperwork
- Original registration document
- Current V5c
- Extensive photo record of the restoration
- Previous invoices
Bought by a couple of retired professional vehicle restorers as a retirement project and only completed in 2020, this MG is a real stunner. The attention to detail over the 3-year project is breathtaking and is backed up by a large photographic record. There is an original workshop manual as well as the original registration document. It is often a dangerous thing to suggest that any project was a ‘full nut and bolt’ restoration, but this must come very close indeed as the attention to detail is considerable.
The Interior
- Reupholstered seating
- Recovered dashboard
- Refurbished instrumentation
The cockpit of the MG TD is a fairly small affair that is dominated by the large steering wheel and large instruments behind it. Those said instruments are bright and clear and all the switchgear is where it is supposed to be and is either refurbed or replaced with age-correct versions to maintain originality. The dash itself has been re-covered in the same red material as the seats and looks splendid. The seats have been rebuilt and recovered along with the little door cards. The areas of exposed paint in the cockpit are just as shiny as the outside too. All in all the interior of this little gem could be described as ‘good as new’, the quality of craftsmanship is that good.
The Exterior
- Fabulous red exterior
- Bright chrome embellishments
- Age-correct steel wheels
- Beautifully clear windscreen with age-correct wiper
- New hood and tonneau
The paintwork is a gorgeously glossy red which has been applied in a meticulous manner which helps the car have that ‘brand new’ look to it. The shut lines and panel gaps are precise and could possibly be just as good if not better than the factory. All the chrome embellishments and badging are where they are supposed to be and are clean and bright. The grille takes centre stage and is spotless. The little car stands on a set of factory steel wheels with hubcaps and as you’d expect, these too are in as near-perfect condition as I’m allowed to say. A new ‘Double Duck’ material hood has been fitted along with matching side screens and is all partnered by a tonneau cover in the same material. All lighting has been tastefully and dutifully remained as the factory intended.
The Mechanics
- Complete rebuild of the engine
- Fully rebuilt gearbox
- Pictorial history of mechanical work
- Completely overhauled steering and suspension
The 1250cc engine has received just as much attention as the bodywork. It has been removed from the car complete with the gearbox and both have received a complete dismantle and rebuild. The engine has remained standard and retains the original twin-carb set-up which is sat on a delightfully polished manifold. Everything has been re-wired and the car still runs with a dynamo. The gearbox has also benefitted from a rigorous inspection and rebuild at the same time as the engine. The remaining mechanicals, steering, suspension and rear axle have all been fully overhauled.
Summary
Here’s a car that has undergone the most stringent and thorough restoration by a pair of retired professionals. It was unfortunate that both men became too unwell to enjoy the fruits of their labour which is why the car has now become available. When the car was finished in 2020 it was taken to a local show where it was immediately awarded first prize in the Concours category and it’s plain to see why. It is a delight and the attention to detail is most impressive and should be described as a nut-and-bolt restoration. No expense or detail has been left to chance both mechanically and aesthetically which means if you are looking for an MG TD that is as near perfect as you could imagine, then this is a car you need to be considering. After all, and as we often say, “Find me another one”.
