The Appeal

A stylish and solidly built motorcar, the 220 is a shining example of the kind of cars that Mercedes built its reputation upon. This imposing vehicle has bucketloads of road presence and remains stylish and sophisticated at the same time.
This particular example is beautifully presented throughout, having been recently resprayed in light green over black. The interior is smart yet pleasantly well-used, while the paintwork is superb.
Under the bonnet is a powerful and dependable straight-six engine, which has been upgraded with electronic ignition, an alternator and 12V electrical system. All of this adds to the long list of reasons you’ll be driving this car to the shops, instead of that boring modern thing parked in the garage next to it.

The Interior

  • Beautifully patinated leather upholstery
  • Fine burr veneers
  • Chrome switches and trim

Sumptuousness abounds in this splendid Mercedes. The leather seats are well padded, generously proportioned and supportive, and the leather upholstery is in beautifully patinated condition. There is a little cracking to the seat covers from use, but they remain perfectly serviceable and tell the story of years of enjoyable motoring. And to the rear there is additional fold-down seating for two passengers, should the need arise.
A white steering wheel with chrome horn ring protrudes proudly from the dashboard, and the column-mounted gear change leaves plenty of legroom for the front passengers. The dashboard is trimmed and topped in exquisite bookmatched burr veneers, which retain a deep, lustrous shine, and these complement the pull switches which operate with a reassuring click. The instruments are bold and clear, and chrome sliders operate the heating and ventilation controls.
Beautifully trimmed leather covers the rear-hinged doors, which feature arm rests, window winders and storage pockets. The matching carpets are trimmed in the same leather and remain in excellent condition throughout, with very little sign of use. The only reported issues are a crack to the veneer on the windscreen surround and little fraying on the inside rear wing covering.
To the rear, the spacious boot features leather straps to secure luggage, and below the boot floor is a full size spare wheel, and a selection of tools, including a jack and wheel brace.

The Exterior

  • Supremely stylish cabriolet body
  • Recently resprayed paintwork in excellent condition
  • Beautifully polished chrome trim

The 220 is a superbly proportioned example of Mercedes-Benz’s early styling. And even more so in cabriolet form. The flowing lines give it a graceful appearance of effortless stylishness.
The car’s body panels all appear to be very well presented with no issues to report other than a small dimple in the front right wing. And the recently applied paintwork also remains in excellent condition, with no obvious scratches or significant chips.
A very smartly finished hood can be raised to provide excellent weather protection. It is beautifully presented, with no stains, damage or creases that we could see, and features beautifully chromed fittings.
The car runs on a set of steel wheels, painted to match the body, which feature chrome hubcaps and trim. They are shod in a matching set of Michelin whitewall tyres, which look fabulous. And underneath, the structure of the car looks to be in very good condition, with no significant corrosion or damage we could see.

The Mechanics

  • 2,195cc straight-six engine
  • Partially rebuilt engine
  • Alternator and electronic ignition fitted

Under the sizeable bonnet of this Mercedes lies its solidly capable six-cylinder petrol engine. It has benefited from a partial overhaul and is also fitted with electronic ignition for reliability. The electrical system has been converted to 12V and the dynamo has been replaced with an alternator to provide better charging.
The engine bay is supremely clean and tidy, making it a pleasure to look at and pleasant to work on. Similarly, the underside looks clean, tidy and free from significant leaks.
The suspension components and running gear appear to be very well presented, with the independent coil-sprung front suspension providing superb ride quality and passenger comfort.

Summary

A fine example of a 220, this Cabriolet is beautifully presented throughout, having benefited from restoration and refurbishment throughout its life. It is certainly a luxurious way to get around and will make a superb addition to anyone’s fleet.
