1952 Citroën Traction Avant Onze Legere 11 BL

Highlights

  • Restored during the late 1990s and has since weathered in nicely
  • Electrics converted to 12 volt with an alternator fitted
  • Interior fully reupholstered in the original material

The Appeal

The Citroën Traction Avant is without doubt one of the most pioneering cars of the twentieth century, bringing together cutting edge technologies like monocoque construction and front wheel drive.
This French-built 1952 example has been in the UK for some time and was the vendor’s daily driver for a few years in the late 1990s. It was professionally restored inside and out some years ago and continues to present very well indeed.
In spite of their age, these innovative Citroën’s are actually very usable even today compared to many of their contemporaries. This example benefits from upgraded 12 volt electrics and a recent replacement of the clutch.

The History and Paperwork

  • V5C present
  • 38,000 non warranted miles
  • Hand written notes detailing work carried out in the past
  • Invoice for comprehensive service in 2019
  • Several parts invoices from the Traction Owners Club
  • Imported from France in 1996
  • Acquired by the vendor around 6 months after import
  • Used daily for a few years
  • Subsequently restored
  • Used more sparingly in recent years
  • Resides in a garage

The Interior

  • Retrimmed some years ago remaining faithful to the original materials
  • Light wear on the driver’s seat from use
  • Very little wear on the remaining upholstery including the door cards
  • There is some patination on the interior door handles and window winders
  • The steering column in a little rusty but this does not impede operation in any way
  • The steering wheel centre is slightly damaged although the remainder of the wheel is not
  • Delightful patination on the combined gauge cluster which functions correctly
  • Carpeting and rubber floor mats appear in good condition through the cabin and boot
  • The headlining is clean and correctly supported
  • Inside the boot all appears in good order
  • Spare wheel, jack, toolkit and starting handle included

The Exterior

  • Repainted black in the late ‘90s
  • A repair panel was let into the rear sections of the front wings during the restoration
  • According to the vendor there is some slight paint bubbling on one of the rear wings and next to the bonnet central hinge
  • Looks to be in good condition underneath and would perhaps benefit from re-undersealing
  • Stainless steel bumpers fitted
  • The wheels are in excellent order and new Michelin X tyres are fitted
  • The chrome finish on the wheel centres fuel cap, mirror and light surrounds looks smart
  • The door handles were apparently replaced although now show their age

The Mechanics

  • 1911 cc 4-cylinder engine
  • 12 volt electrical system and alternator fitted
  • Wheel cylinders have been replaced
  • The clutch is relatively new
  • Stainless steel exhaust system
  • Reported to start, run and drive very well with no untoward noises
  • Accelerates steadily through the gears
  • Double de-clutching is advised going down through the gears

Summary

Presented in very fine condition and wearing its older restoration really well, this is a lovely example of the legendary Traction Avant that has been treasured for many years by the same owner.
This is a really usable car, even today and we’re sure it will continue to provide many more years of enjoyment for its next owner.
