1951 MG TD

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Beautifully presented
  • Imported from the States
  • Body off restoration in the UK
  • Just 1000 miles completed since restoration
  • Rebuilt engine

THE APPEAL

Released in 1950, the MG TD utilised the XPAG engine and front suspension from the previous TC model. It had a sturdier chassis and improved handling and comfort as a result of modifications to the Y-type frame. The wheel size was reduced to 15 inches, and wire wheels became a popular option. Abingdon produced 29,664 TDs over four years, making it more popular than the TC.
This classic car was produced in 1951 and was based in the United States until 2017 when the current owner brought it to the United Kingdom. Upon arrival, the owner commissioned a complete body-off restoration and engine rebuild, which was completed in 2018. Since then, the car has only been driven for approximately 1,000 miles. Due to its infrequent use, the current owner has decided to part ways with this quintessential British classic from the 1950s.

  • The instruments have been refurbished and are working correctly apart from the clock, which unfortunately doesn’t work
  • The odometer shows a reading of 41,671 miles
  • The switchgear is in good order and reported to all work as it should, apart from the horn, which the vendor believes is the horn itself

  • The carpets have been replaced, and therefore are like new

THE EXTERIOR

  • Finished in cream, although the vendor can’t remember the name of the colour chosen
  • The paintwork presents very well, and there are no chips to point out. A small amount of paint has come off part of the door hinge, but it can be easily touched up
  • The doors and bonnet fit well

  • The windscreen is in good condition, as is the frame. This also drops down if required

  • The rear light lenses are free from damage
  • The fabric roof and side windows are all new and in excellent condition

  • The spare wheel is also present and mounted behind the luggage rack
  • Four new Michelin tyres are fitted

THE MECHANICS

  • 1250cc engine
  • The engine is reported to have been fully rebuilt
  • This fires up with a touch of choke and idles smoothly
  • The Four-speed gearbox has also been rebuilt
  • No untoward noises are coming from the transmission, and the gear change is as you would expect
  • The body and chassis were separated for the restoration and completely stripped back
  • The suspension was completely overhauled with new parts fitted or refurbished
  • The brakes bring the MG to a stop in a straight line

SUMMARY
