  • UK registered.
  • Runs and drives but in need of a fettle

  • Uniquely registered as a Lea Francis Pickup on the V5

THE APPEAL

Lea-Francis "Special" is a term often used to describe various custom built cars that were based on Lea-Francis chassis and drivetrains. They were often created for racing or performance purposes and were usually designed to be faster and more agile than the original untampered Lea Francis models.
Enthusiasts and privateers often modified the standard Lea-Francis chassis by incorporating custom bodywork, lightweight materials and a more powerful engine.
This particular example was transformed into a pickup after it suffered some damage to the rear (unrecorded with the DVLA) back in the 1970's in which it has since been transformed into a pickup (see the bundle of photo's below) then a change of body type was recorded with the DVLA.

The last owner set to work changing the rear into an estate type vehicle and it was used most weekends until ill-health meant it had to be sold on.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • It was first registered in 1951.
  • Mileage counter is showing 8109 miles but this can not be verified.
  • The Lea Francis runs and drives but has been off the road for 2 years and now needs some recommissioning work.
  • UK registered as a pickup. We are informed that this maybe the only one to be registered as such.
  • Tax and MOT exempt.
  • Plethora of paperwork, letters and documentation.
  • Only four owners since it was first registered.
  • Dry stored.
  • Current vendor purchased the vehicle in 2021 with plans to make it back into a pickup or coffee van but has too many other projects and a full time job so its time for this one to find a new home.

THE INTERIOR

  • Original steering wheel and gauges.
  • Carpet and headlining required.
  • Wear evident throughout.
  • Steering wheel showing age.
  • All the gauges and switches within the vehicle are said to be working as they should do.
  • The wooden dashboard is very simple but presents well.
  • Nice condition vinyl and wood finished door cards.
  • Radio and cassette present as is an 8 track stereo, the vendor may have some 8 track tapes to throw in FOC.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Appears to be free from any large damage.
  • Marks and crazing to the paintwork all around.
  • Badging presents well, there are some signs of ageing present.
  • Wheels look to be in reasonable condition.
  • Lights are presenting well with no fading that we saw on either the front or rear lights, one front headlight is however cracked.
  • Chromework would benefit from recommissioning.
  • Little corrosion that we saw around the vehicle.
  • Front of the Lea Francis is original panels we believe.

THE MECHANICS

  • Rebuilt engine on 2001 with receipts to match.
  • The Lea Francis starts, runs, drives and stops well, but as said she has been laid up so would benefit from an overhaul and checks all round.
  • Manual four speed gearbox.
  • New starter and solenoid fitted recently.

SUMMARY

This example has the potential to be something exciting, whether that it is transformed into something new or recommissioned to its original state, the sky is the limit with this particular example.

Yes you will need a trailer/transporter to take her away and she isn’t yet fit for that weekend jaunt to your local show, but with very basic mechanicals and panelling, imagine the fun it will be creating your own special project!
