The Appeal
Sydney Allard was a visionary, a capable engineer of the sort Britain excelled at between and after the wars. Like Enzo Ferrari, when it came to building cars, Sydney really wanted to go racing: road cars were a means to an end.
Amongst the array of dazzling Allard models was the P1 saloon, a four-seater with the heart of a race car. Beneath the unusual styling, which took a ‘form follows function’ approach typical of Allard, was a burbling Ford flathead V8. Sydney couldn’t resist taking it racing - he piloted a P1 to victory on the 1952 Monte Carlo rally.
That heritage didn’t do much for sales. Only 557 P1s were built, buyers perhaps put off by the price, the unusual styling and the lack of chrome that otherwise adorned the P1’s competitors.
According to The Allard Register only 42 are reputed to survive. That makes this 1951 example, resplendent in silver, a rare find. It is in good, usable condition with original flathead V8 and stylish burgundy leather interior.
There is scope to use it as is - it would be perfect fort classic car tours - whilst perhaps lightly refreshing the cosmetics as you go. Some recommissioning following storage may be required, after which you have an unusual and distinctive post-war classic.
