The Appeal
The Sunbeam Talbot 90 was unveiled in the summer of ’48 with a 1944cc four-cylinder engine redesigned from the previous Sunbeam Talbot 2-litre, now giving 64 bhp. The 4-door sports saloon featured the pillarless join between the glass on the rear door and rear quarter window which was one of the many fondly remembered design cues of the car.
With 4000 made between 1948 and 1950, it was quite a successful car for the company, and it received good press from critics at the time for both its function and design.
This example has had recent restoration work completed and from the paperwork is well known by the owners’ clubs. Purchased by the current owner with the aim of being a wedding car, personal circumstances have now changed and the decision to sell on has been made.
The History and Paperwork
- One set of keys with two ignition keys
- Current V5C
- Sunbeam workshop manual for 90 mark II and IIA, III and alpine marks I, II and special
- Various correspondence papers from previous keeper and owners club including information on identification and miscellaneous parts
- Photos of restoration work and correspondence from ‘Lemon Road Classic Vehicle Services’ who, it seems, have looked after the car and possibly even carried out the restoration work
The Interior
- Re-trimmed interior in red upholstery, excellent condition and is a real highlight of the car contrasting the exterior colour nicely
- All is believed to be working in the interior in terms of dials and gauges
- Headlining is in good condition with only very minor marks as seen in the photos
- Sunroof reportedly working as intended
- Wonderfully designed central speedo
- Boot space is plentiful, clean and well-trimmed
The Exterior
- Exterior colour is believed to be Satin Bronze and is in good condition overall
- One small mark on the bonnet where it is catching the chrome grille
- Chrome trim in in good condition with minimal pitting, rear bumper will need re-chroming
- Wheels and tyres look to be in great condition with colour matched rims and chrome hubcaps
- Tyres look to have plenty of tread left and the sidewalls are not cracked or dry
- Slight door adjustment needed but otherwise all panel gaps seem to be straight and uniform
- Glass and lenses around the car are in good condition with no cracks, chips or hazing to note
- Bumper could benefit with a re-chrome
The Mechanics
- First of all, the underside looks to be in good condition providing plenty of access for photos to be taken
- Engine bay also, visually looks to be in good order and the owner reports the car to drive nicely
- Vendor has assured us the car is running well but will need a gasket fitted at some point as currently there is red sealant over the area to prevent leaks
- From initial visual impressions, there doesn’t seem to be any exposed wires, split pipes or hoses or evidence of worrying fluid leaks, but please do inspect the photos to see for yourself
Summary
A charmingly handsome car that has clearly had significant care and finances spent on it recently, there is a wonderfully finished interior and a fantastic exterior colour to give this car lots of character. All it needs now is a new loving owner who will see it used and enjoyed as it should be.
