The APPEAL
The classic British sports car debuted in 1950 under the banner of the MG (Morris Garages) division, a part of the British Motor Corporation (BMC). The MG TD model succeeded the MG TC and marked a significant shift in design and comfort for MG enthusiasts.
Compared to its predecessor, the TD boasted a more contemporary and streamlined design. It featured a slightly wider body and a more spacious interior, addressing concerns about comfort, particularly for taller drivers. The car was a traditional roadster, complete with a folding convertible top and side curtains.

This lovely 1950 example was purchased by the owner in 2020. Unfortunately, the owner has sadly passed away, and the car is being sold from the estate. This also means we don't know any of the previous history for the car as the paperwork is relatively thin.
It was imported to the UK in 1981 and has seen just three keepers. There has been a restoration on the car, but there is no indication of when this was carried out. Even though the history is minimal, we can only go on the condition of the car, which is very good, and it appears to have been well cared for over the years.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

- UK registered 16th December 1981
- Three previous UK keepers
- Some previous MOT certificates
- MG Midget Service Manual
- Currently, the MG is SORN

THE INTERIOR
- Original features
- Leather seats
- Well presented
The inside of the MG presents very well. The tan leather bench seat is in good order with just minor signs of patina but no damage. Both door cards are in good order with no scuffs or damage, and the carpets are in very good condition with no real signs of excessive wear.
Sitting behind the wheel of the MG takes you straight back to 1950, and everything is as you would expect. The steering wheel is in good order, and there is no damage to the dash fascia. The instruments are reported to work correctly, with the odometer showing a reading of 6,468 miles. The vendor did point out that the clock within the instruments appears to be printed on for aesthetic purposes. The switchgear looks to be original with some small signs of age, as you would expect, but is all reported to work as it should.
There is a tonneau cover which can be fitted to protect the interior, and this also doubles up to cover the roof when folded down. This is in excellent condition and fits nice and tight.
THE EXTERIOR
- Classic colour scheme
- Excellent brightwork
- Recently refurbished wheels
Finished in what is considered to be British Racing Green, the paintwork on the MG is in lovely condition. There are some minor age-related blemishes and a tiny amount of crazing on the nearside rear wheel arch.
Starting at the front of the MG, the brightwork has a tarnish-free finish, the grille is nice and straight with no dings or dents, and the headlights are clear of any chips or cracks in the lenses, and there are a few very minor chips on the leading edges of the front wings. The bonnet fits well and opens up easily on either side. Further up, the windscreen frame looks in good order, and there are no noticeable scratches to the windscreen.
Around to the sides, the wings flow down the side of the car perfectly into the running boards, which are free from any scuffs. The doors align well and shut with a firm feel. The tan canvas roof is in good condition, but there are some water marks which have unfortunately stained it. The side screens are all in good condition and fit well.
At the rear of the car, the chrome bumper has a bright finish, the spare wheel was refurbished with the rest and is in excellent condition with a new tyre fitted, and both light lenses are free from splits or cracks.
The wheels were refurbished in March 2021; these have been finished in smooth semi-metallic silver with a chrome hubcap and are in excellent condition. The tyres are all matching and have a good amount of tread remaining.
THE MECHANICS
- 1200cc four-cylinder engine
- Four-speed gearbox
- Excellent runner
The engine in the MG TD is a four-cylinder 1,250cc engine. Thanks to the upgraded electronic ignition system, the car fires up without hesitation. The vendor reports the car runs as it should with no issues to report. Looking around the well-presented engine bay, no leaks were spotted, and everything appeared in good order.
The four-speed gearbox has a precise change with no untoward noises reported from the transmission. On the road, the car has a firm but comfortable ride with no knocks or bangs coming from either corner of the car.
When it comes to stopping the MG, new shoes have been fitted to the brakes, and it is said to stop in a straight line with no issues.
