The Appeal
The story of MG's T-Type is one of evolution rather than revolution. Abingdon's engineers continually refined the original pre-war formula over several consecutive iterations until it was eventually replaced by the all-new MGA in in 1955.
We're delighted to offer this MG TD - the penultimate model in the T-series. While still based on the TC's mechanicals, the TD borrowed the MG Y-Type's coil-spring independent front suspension and four-speed gearbox, as well as introducing rack and pinion steering and smaller 15-inch disc-type road wheels. The trusty XPAG engine received a higher compression ratio, resulting in a very respectable 57bhp output, while the rear axle ratio was raised accordingly to attain a 77mph top speed.
Much like its predecessor which had been a huge hit Stateside, the MG TD was sold exceedingly well in America. In all, nearly 30,000 MG TDs were made, of which just 1,656 remained in the UK. That makes original right-hand drive UK examples like this something of a rarity.
Affectionately dubbed “Elspeth”, our MG TD has been in single ownership since 1969! The owner restored the car early on during their long custodianship and have since taken very good care of it. The engine has been bored and stroked to 1,350cc by renowned specialists XPAG Engineering and the car is reported to be "on the button" - a testament to its continued preservation.
The quintessential British sports car to attend shows or embark upon jaunts in the countryside, this MG TD is an excellent candidate for your consideration. It's vanishingly rare to find a car that's been in such long-term single ownership, let alone in such good condition as this.
