The Appeal
While they were a somewhat ill-fated brand, Lea Francis were one of the staples of the earlier British automotive industry and carved out a legacy of well-appointed, sporty vehicles with unfussy lineage. Of all of their cars, the 1.8 Four-Light was easily their most numerous, with around 1,500 produced.
Designed to fit the idea of a banker’s car, the business lineage is clear to see with its simple profile, classic lines and plain black colour scheme. It’s most certainly a city car through and through - though a very nicely finished one.
This example is in superb condition through, with a stack of invoices for work taken, largely original fabric and minimal wear.

- Distinctive instruments and monogrammed steering wheel appear in fine condition
- Boot appears clean and well-kept, with no clear signs of corrosion and a spare wheel
The Exterior
- The Four-Light’s exterior is a naturally understated one, unfussy and sharp

- Paintwork appears to be in excellent condition throughout with no reported loss or corrosion
- Chromework appears to be in fine fettle with only slight texture commensurate with age
- Branding and accents all present and correct
- Wheels in good order with monogrammed alloys and good tyres
- Underside shows some wear, and blistering, but appears clean, painted and treated
The Mechanics
- Car’s mechanics are reportedly original with no modifications

- Engine bay appears clean and no faults or corrosion have been reported
- We’re informed of no mechanical faults to the vehicle
Summary
With its characteristically British profile, the Four-Light is a conservative motor with a charming character of its own. The black livery, shining chrome and classical interior may not immediately stand out from the crowd, but that’s not what made the car so successful. Rather, it’s an excellent characterisation of the era, a good all-rounder.
Whether you’re a seasoned collector of the time period or a dedicated Lea Francis enthusiast, you’d struggle to find better than this example, with its original fabric and fine condition making it a superb pick from a desirable, quintessentially British maker.
