1950 Ford F100 Pickup Hot Rod - 460ci V8

Highlights

  • Utterly unique
  • 460ci (7.5-litre) Ford V8
  • Manual transmission
  • Two owners since UK import

The Appeal

If you grew up on a steady TV diet of Mustangs in ‘Frisco, Chargers driven by “good ol’ boys” and Lee Majors hurling a brown truck into the air at every opportunity, there’s a good chance that, like us, you’ve a soft spot for some American muscle. And they don’t come much more American or muscular than this.
The first generation ‘F-series’ was Genesis for Ford’s all-conquering pickup trucks. Now the world’s best selling vehicle, there is quite simply nothing more American than this. Well, unless you can find a Bald Eagle painted red, white and blue, holding a rifle in one claw and an apple pie in the other. But we digress.
America has brought us many great things, but the ‘Hot Rod’ scene must surely be one of the best. And this is a great example of the breed. The recipe is simple - take an everyday vehicle, customise is to look a little less stock, whack in the biggest engine you can lay your hands on. Job done. If you love drama in your vehicles and want to make sure that everyone within a two-mile radius knows when you come and go, then this is definitely the machine for you. It’s utterly and completely mad, and we adore it.

Oh, and by the way, this 7.5-litre V8 Hot Rod? It’s ULEZ compliant. Fantastic.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in December 1950
  • Imported to the UK in August 2018
  • Two UK owners
  • Current owner since March 2021
  • Historic vehicle status - MOT and tax exempt
  • Hilariously, this is ULEZ compliant
  • South Dakota Title document
  • DVLA registration documents and numberplate authorisation certificate

The Interior

  • Lovely three-seat red velour bench seat, complete with period correct lap-belts
  • The upholstery is in very good condition, with no significant wear, no tears and no damage we could see
  • The floor is adorned with black carpet which presents well, with no threading or staining apparent
  • Billet B&B gear shifter
  • Smart, wood-rimmed steering wheel
  • A modern instrument pack has been installed in a stainless surround – included is a tachometer, water temp gauge, transmission temp gauge, oil pressure gauge and voltmeter
  • We’re told by the vendor that everything in the cabin works just as it should, with no faults to declare
  • At the back, the wood bed is heavily worn and patinated, perfectly in character for the vehicle
  • A beer barrel tank and the battery are installed in the back of the load bed

The Exterior

  • As you can see from the pictures, the bodywork is heavily worn and patinated, perfect for the Hot Rod “rat look” that remains very popular
  • Numerous scuffs, marks and dings litter the body, creating a characterful tapestry of wear
  • The bodywork has been matt lacquered to protect the finish and ensure the vehicle retains this wonderful aesthetic
  • The brightwork adds a fine pop of jewellery to the exterior, even though is wears some pitting and light wear befitting of its age
  • We’re told by the vendor that the lights have been upgraded
  • We love the period metal sun visor that’s mounted over the front windscreen, adding a neat custom touch that authentic to the period
  • Wide, polished metal wheels are fitted, shod in fat tyres with deep sidewalls to help transfer all that torque and grunt to the tarmac
  • Underneath, the drivetrain components appear to be mostly factory – they wear plenty of surface corrosion but look solid

The Mechanics

  • 460ci ‘big block’ Ford V8 (7.5-litre)
  • Manual transmission
  • Rear wheel drive
  • The suspension has been lowered for a mean, Hot Rod look
  • We’re informed that the exhaust is a straight-pipe system and so is magnificently loud
  • The vendor tells us that the truck drives well, is very fast, very loud and draws admiring looks and comments wherever it goes

Summary

Not for the faint of heart or those of a shy disposition, this ‘big block’ Hot Rod Pickup is, in our opinion, a perfect slice of historic Americana. Ideal for shows, sunny weekend drives or, for the truly dedicated, even as a daily driver, one thing is for certain – not much else will get as much attention as this.
