1949 Fiat 500 C Barchetta

Photos provided by the vendor

Highlights

  • Restored to an exceedingly high standard
  • Built in 1951 by Turin coachbuilder Officina Avalle, founded in 1911
  • Reportedly in excellent mechanical order, running and driving impeccably

The Appeal

Meaning “little boat” in Italian, the word ‘Barchetta’ is traditionally applied to open sports cars and here we have one such early post war example based upon a Fiat Topolino. We understand that it was constructed in 1951 by Torinese coachbuilder Officina Avalle, although beyond that, little is known of this curious car’s history.
It was restored to an exceedingly good standard and remains to this day in excellent mechanical and cosmetic order. Such a car wouldn’t look out of place in the Mille Miglia or Targa Florio and the Automotoclub Storico Italiano have recognised the historical significance of this car with a plaque which is affixed to the inside of the bulkhead.

The History and Paperwork

  • Based upon a 1949 Fiat Topolino
  • Built by Officina Avalle in 1951
  • Restored and ready to use

The Interior

  • Restored to period specification
  • Blue leather upholstery
  • Vintage fire extinguisher (decorative)
As is the case with every aspect of this car, the interior of this Fiat has been restored beautifully.
Fine blue leather covers the seats, which look to have seen very little use. There’s no heavy wear, or indeed damage that we could see. The flooring is lined in a blue material also, complementing the seats and providing a hint of plushness to an otherwise spartan, paired back cockpit.
The dashboard is merely an extension of the scuttle panel that tucks neatly back upon itself at 90 degrees and is finished in body colour. The instruments and switchgear present well and we understand all to be working. A charming Grand Prix wheel makes steering a delight and it wears a slight patina of use. There’s little in the way of wear to the other controls with just some light abrasion to the pedals.
Overall, a very smart interior that has a great original look and feel.

The Exterior

  • Striking red paintwork
  • Le Mans-style filler flap
  • Impeccably presented underneath
While it may be diminutive in size, there’s no chance this Fiat will pass by unnoticed. Its unique, slippery shape is quite distinctive and looks every bit the period racing car.
The bodywork looks immensely straight and the paint finish would appear to be sublime. It holds a deep shine which positively glistens under natural light. The sides are adorned with various stickers, from a Pegasus to a helpful vinyl explaining to passers by what it is exactly. There is no windscreen as such, or a roof of course, so goggles and wet weather gear are advisable!
We’re pleased to report all seems as clean and well presented underneath as on top, evidence that the quality of the restoration work was incredibly high. The wheels look immensely smart and are shod with period-style tyres.

The Mechanics

  • 569 cc engine
  • Four-speed manual gearbox
  • Reportedly in excellent running and driving order
While a 569 cc engine driving the rear wheels may not sound like much, there’s plenty of performance available for a car of this low mass and the vendor informs us that the drive is both sporting and enjoyable.
All presents really well under the bonnet and we understand all to be in excellent order. We’re not informed of any issues and the vendor reports that all the car’s key functions operate admirably.

Summary

For those seeking something distinctive and unusual in their Italian sports car, this little Barchetta has a lot to offer. Rare and beautifully restored, we’re sure it would become the focal point of any collection.
