The Appeal

The early post-war years were a tough time for Rover and it was of course this period of austerity which would spawn the Land Rover in 1948. Rover was also keen to continue its steel-bodied saloons, despite materials being in scarce supply, and the P3 was the first.

This 75 model '6-Light Saloon' (referencing the number of windows) underwent restoration in 2009 and has since been very well looked after. The addition of a Ford Sierra five-speed gearbox greatly enhances its drivability, so if you're looking for an early post-war Rover you can drive on today's roads without brushing up on your double-declutching skills, this would be a great option. It's not often these come to market, let alone in such nice condition.

  • Purchased a few years ago by the current owner
  • The current owner has spent £1,400 on the car; all invoices can reportedly be provided
  • Restored in 2009
  • Comes with photos of the restoration work, assorted invoices, a workshop manual, and a parts list

The Condition

  • The Rover looks to have been restored to a very good standard and it continues to present very well throughout
  • The vendor notes that the body seems solid and has no visible corrosion
  • Very presentable paintwork in a jolly two-tone scheme
  • The chromework gleams and appears only lightly pitted in places
  • We're notified of a few marks at the rear and a few bubbles on the roof
  • All looks very well underneath with no obvious issues to report
  • Exceedingly smart interior, quite luxuriously appointed for its day
  • The upholstery is only lightly worn and the same can be said of the carpets and door trim
  • We're not informed of any known issues with the controls, instruments and switchgear
  • Period-correct gear selector appearance retained in spite of gearbox upgrade

The Mechanics

  • 2,103cc four-cylinder petrol engine
  • Five-speed manual gearbox
  • A Ford Sierra five-speed gearbox was fitted during the restoration process to enhance performance and fuel economy
  • The vendor reports that it starts and drives without any issues
  • As you'd expect, performance isn't especially brisk, but the upgraded gearbox greatly extends its comfortable cruising speed
