The Appeal

After six years of producing tanks and armoured cars for the war effort, MG announced the TC Midget a mere five weeks after the official end of hostilities in Europe. By the end of 1945, 81 examples had been produced, and that's no mean feat given the dire economic circumstances, rationing of raw materials, and shortage of skilled labour.

British carmakers were acutely aware that they would have to "export or die," and MG secured its future thanks to the burgeoning American market. Many US 'GIs' had been stationed in the UK during the war, so they returned home having experienced the delights of the previous T Series MG sports cars. Naturally, they all wanted one. Therefore, most TCs were destined for a life overseas.

That's what makes this 1948 example rare. It's a UK home market right-hand drive TC. The last custodian purchased it in March 1980 as a running, very usable example. In 1986, the owner embarked on a nut-and-bolt concours restoration, which was entrusted to several well-regarded specialists. All mechanical work was carried out professionally, and the restoration was completed in 1997. Since then, the MG has covered a mere 422 miles and remains in superb condition.
