  • Documented history

The Appeal

Triumph’s pre-war Dolomite range was part of the firm’s determined drive upmarket, with a bid to exploit the burgeoning demand for sporting-orientated saloon cars in the late pre-war era. Instantly identifiable by its srtriking ‘waterfall’ grille, designed by Walter Belgrove and influenced by transatlantic trends, it was an advanced car developed with input from racing driver Donald Healey.

With wind-up windows, a self-lubricating chassis, full synchromesh gearbox, dual circuit hydraulic brakes and even an adjustable steering column, it was a hugely advanced car for its day, offered in coupé, roadster and saloon body styles, all equipped with the firm’s powerful 1.8-litre engine.

This is a 14/60 saloon – one of only 112 built 11 survivors known to The Pre-War Triumph Motor Club. An older restoration, the car was registered in the UK in 1939 but was exported to Australia, where it remained until 2015. It was repatriated by the chairman of the Pre-1940 Triumph club, who owned it since.

Sympathetically restored many years ago, it has been fastidiously cared for since and looks magnificent, the refurbishment work having held up very well. Inside, it’s unrestored, the 85-year old cabin wearing a characterful patina.

It’s a lovely old thing – usable and easy-to-drive by pre-war standards, and in healthy overall order with a substantial history file.
