Ford’s 221CI Pilot was well named. With 81bhp on tap, this was a compact V8 that gave flight to even the most humdrum saloons. No surprise, then, that it is a regular choice for hot rods and rat rods. It is a small, durable motor that can be put easily to work with virtually any pre-war classic and is, of course, period correct. 

The larger 3,622cc Pilot engine was introduced in 1937 so this 1938 example is an early one. It has been in long term storage by the seller at his premises in New Zealand and was recent shipped to his site in Holland. It is supplied with Dutch importation documentation and all duties paid. 

The engine has been known to the seller for some time and carefully dry stored and unused for several years. On arrival in Holland it was carefully checked over by the seller’s workshop and found to be in good, serviceable condition. 

It presents well in photographs having been repainted.  It is fitted with spark plugs and some ancillaries as shown. Naturally it has not run for some time but the seller is not aware of any issues with it.
