The Appeal
Daimler's 'New Fifteen' was introduced in 1932, as Daimler's response to the Great Depression. Purse strings were tight, and car sales were dropping like a stone - but for the company to drop its comfortable, dignified image was unthinkable. As a result, the New Fifteen still felt distinguished and stylish, with a scalloped radiator and big, broad fenders. It steadily developed sequentially, taking on larger engines in kind.
This culminated in 1938 with the 17/1, with the 2166cc 6-cylinder block under its handsome bonnet. However, it was a short-lived offering - manufactured for only one year until the DB18, which was swiftly packed up by the outbreak of war. Overall, it was not a particularly lucky car. That's much to the interest of the modern enthusiast, though; the DB17/1 is now vanishingly scarce.
This example has been commendably kept, offering plenty old-money charm, and is accompanied by an impressive file of handbooks, brochures and manuals. It's very original throughout, solidly kept and ready for returning to the road with its lucky new keeper.
