1937 Rolls-Royce 25/30 hp Mann Egerton Saloon

Highlights

  • Dry stored and well cared for
  • Mann Egerton Coachbuilder’s body in excellent shape
  • Recent maintenance and service completed

The Appeal

The Rolls-Royce 25/30 was launched in 1936, and ended production in 1938 with a reported 1,201 automobiles having been delivered. Replacing the previous 20/25 model, the 25/30 introduced a larger 4,257cc engine to power the larger bodies being produced at the time. It used an improved version of the older engine, with a larger capacity brought forth by an increased bore. In addition, Rolls Royce also fitted an uprated Stromberg downdraught carburettor.
This saloon version, built by the prestigious Norwich based coachbuilder Mann Egerton, was delivered on 29th January 1937. With an especially stylised design, elegant colourway, and with extra capacity in the rear provided by the four doors, it proves to be an exceptionally unique 25/30. Based on information stated in the factory documents as included in copy form, the exterior has preserved its original colour and shape. This example is reportedly in original spec, unmodified, and showing little signs of wear.

The History and Paperwork

  • Accompanied by quality copy of the original sales invoice and spec sheet
  • Matching VIN/engine numbers
  • Photocopy of Rolls Royce 25/30 handbook included
  • MOT and tax exempt, no previous MOT history available
  • Documented history file
Purchased recently, the current owner has used the vehicle for light pleasure driving for the past year and is now selling the vehicle to fund an upcoming project.
Included in the sale is a file partially documenting the life of the vehicle, stating that it was an original Mann Egerton Saloon, delivered in 1937 to the UK market.
The exterior and interior have reportedly remained original throughout its lifetime, with an interior restoration completed by a previous owner some point in its lifetime, which remains in excellent condition.

The Interior

  • Reportedly all-original specification interior
  • All electrical equipment said to be in working order
  • Interior in overall excellent condition with only very minor signs of use
With most coachbuilt vehicles of this era, there comes an overwhelming sense of hand-built craftsmanship apparent in the design and finish; the Mann Egerton saloon is no exception to this notion.
Deep leather seats are present in both the front and rear of the cabin, both of remarkable quality, utilising high-quality leather, and good cushioning and stitching. The seats are in excellent condition, with some signs of use seen which are not intrusive.
The dashboard is in good shape structurally but presents with minor wear, notably the wood veneer is partially missing, with only a few small areas where it still can be seen.
The large diameter steering wheel found on this Rolls is unquestionably a true statement piece, and presents wonderfully. The levers and switchgear are present and functioning, but the black laminate is peeling away in some places as pictured.
The current owner also assures us that all of the electronics are in working order. All windows operate smoothly, including the centre divide which optionally separates the front and rear cabins, operated by a knob in the centre of the rear passenger area.
Opening the rear tailgate, we find a multi-sectioned storage area with pull-down tool kit panels, still containing the majority of its tools and extras. The wood trim in the rear is structurally and visually in good shape considering the age of the coach.

The Exterior

  • Very straight body
  • “Spirit of Ecstasy” in near-perfect condition
  • exterior in overall excellent condition with only minor blemishes seen
  • Black and cream exterior perfectly suits the vehicle’s elegance
  • All brightwork still gleaming
The exterior of this Rolls is in above average condition for its age. While there are a couple of light scratches, some very light paint swirls here and there, and small marks from the road and typical use, these issues do not detract from the overall exquisite condition of this Rolls.
The front section of the 25/30 is an absolute masterclass in automotive design and embellishment. Present in all their glory, we see beautifully crafted headlights, a central spotlight, two large horns, and the iconic front grille with spirit of ecstasy ornament, all finished in exquisite near-perfect chrome work.
The window glass is in great condition, rather tidy and with the small chips expected from normal use, but nothing larger than a small pinpoint. This one comes complete with a movable top area of the windshield which can be opened or closed to control ventilation.
The wiper trim, rubbers, and exterior seals are all intact and in great condition.
The headlight and taillight lenses are clear, and the indicator lenses show no hint of fogging or haziness.
The original wheels are absolutely stunning, with no hint of corrosion.
The underside of the vehicle shows very little sign of any corrosion, it’s very clear the vehicle has been stored correctly, and kept very clean.

The Mechanics

  • 4,257cc OHV inline-6 engine sounds smooth, refined, and is incredibly quiet as it should be
  • 4-speed gearbox shifts smoothly
  • Owner states it runs perfectly for a vehicle of its age
Opening the double-sided front bonnet panels, the engine bay has little room for improvement visually. The owner assures us that everything is in excellent working condition with no knowledge of any work that needs doing.
The current owner states that the steering, brakes, engine, drivetrain and running gear are performing as well as they should, and better than expected for the age.

Summary

The 25/30’s robustly engineered design, use of high-quality materials, attention to detail, and hand-built quality are overly apparent and present in all aspects. With an almost sinister stylish exterior, solid drivetrain, and absolute top-quality interior, this isn't one to miss. It would be an excellent addition to anyone's collection, but is also an ideal car for someone looking to dive into the opulent world of coachbuilt automotive history.
