The Alvis Speed 25 was introduced in 1937 as a replacement for the less powerful Speed 20. These were powerful touring cars, built to cross continents at speed, all while cosseting their occupants on opulent luxury. Alvis didn't build its own bodies, instead supplying the Speed 25 in chassis form, onto which artisanal coachbuilding firms could exercise their artistry.
This 1937 example has been clothed in a unique style, an open-topped special which, unusually, has four seats. As the photographs attest, it's a very handsome car, and it looks to be in lovely condition for its age. If you're looking for a particularly usable and versatile pre-war tourer, this rare Alvis Speed 25 would be an excellent choice. The car comes with Dutch registration, and the vendor is willing to assist with worldwide shipping if desired.Alvis (11).jpg1.99 MB
The History and Paperwork
Registered in 1937, the first year of Speed 25 production
Sporty 'Special' styling with tapered rear bodywork
Finished to a high standard and continues to present beautifully
Glossy green paint applied to the coachwork
Foldable soft top in good working order
Interior trimmed in red leather
Equipped with fog lights and a full-size spare wheel
A great deal of time and money have clearly been invested in this Alvis, bringing it up to a exceptionally high standard inside and out. The paint and chromework gleam, and the bodywork looks to be immensely straight and solid. The interior has been trimmed in sumptuous red leather, a shade complemented by the wire wheels which have also been finished in red. We understand the wet weather equipment to be in good working order.
3.6-litre (3,571cc) six-cylinder engine producing 137 hp from the factory
Four-speed all-synchro manual transmission
All presents well under the bonnet
The Speed 25 was renowned for its performance at the time, perfect for long-distance touring with a torquey straight-six fed by a brace of three SU carburettors. The gearbox was an early all-synchro four-speed unit, making driving this car considerably easier than most pre-war machines. We note that the engine compartment on this example is impeccably turned out, and we understand the car to be in very good running and driving order with no known faults to report.
