THE APPEAL
During the early 19th century British automaker Austin was undoubtedly conquering the market, from the notorious Austin 7 to the larger Austin 10, the Motor Company were producing affordable and reliable cars for the masses.
By the time the 1930s had arrived, the desire for small-capacity six-cylinder engines had grown and not to be outdone, Herbert Austin commissioned the Austin Light 12/6. Equipped initially with a 1,496cc side-valve straight-6 engine and available as a saloon and tourer only, the 12/6 continued Austin's success and became highly regarded for its reliability and comfortable ride, especially over long distances.
Something that wasn’t offered by Austin on the 12/6 was an estate variant, which makes this car quite the unique offering. Starting life as a saloon in 1933, this vintage Austin has only seen the ownership of five individuals, one of which decided that during the ‘woody’ era of the 1960s, this Austin would make the perfect base for an individual and distinctive shooting brake.
Converted by famous Woody specialists Angel Motor Bodies based in Manchester, the former classic saloon has been transformed into an impressive display of craftsmanship. Wood and metal have been merged, creating an extraordinary car which is believed to be the only Austin 12/6 to have received this conversion.
Purchased in 2007 as part of a small collection, this Austin has spent most of its time stored inside a garage, only being used on rare occasions. It is presented impressively, benefiting from an extensive restoration in the 1980s by a previous owner.
