1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Thrupp & Maberly Saloon

Highlights

  • Dry stored and driven
  • Rare LWB Thrupp and Maberly Limousine
  • Sold in UK, travelled to Spain with its owner, now returned to UK

The Appeal

The Rolls-Royce Phantom II was launched in 1929, replacing the New Phantom. It was the third and final iteration of Rolls-Royce's 40/50 hp models. It used an improved version of the New Phantom engine—remaining 7.7L—but with a new cylinder head, in an all-new chassis.
This LWB version, built by the prestigious British workshop Thrupp & Maberly, was delivered on 25th April 1930. With an especially low and stylised design, and with extra capacity in the rear, it proves to be an exceptionally unique Rolls. Based on information stated in the factory documents as included, the exterior has preserved its original colour and shape. This example is reportedly in original spec, unmodified, and showing little signs of wear for the mileage driven.

The History and Paperwork

  • Accompanied by quality copy of the original sales invoice and spec sheet
  • Matching VIN/engine numbers
  • MOT and tax exempt, no previous MOT history available
  • Photocopy of Rolls Royce handbook included
  • Documented history file
  • Currently registered with a 1963 Suffix 'A' registration plate
  • We understand this to likely be a DVLA error
  • We understand that the car's original registration was 'YY 3634'
Purchased in 2022, the current owner has used the vehicle for light pleasure driving for the past year and is now selling the vehicle to fund an upcoming project.
Included in the sale is a file partially documenting the life of the vehicle, stating that it was an original Thrupp & Maberly Limousine, delivered in 1930. Originally delivered to the UK market, it eventually made its way to Spain with a previous owner, until being returned to the UK in 2022.
The exterior and interior have reportedly remained original throughout its lifetime, and remain in excellent condition. A previous owner has added an electric fuel pump to improve overall usability. The current owner states it has also received a new cylinder head totalling £13,500 courtesy of The Real Car Co Ltd, and a service throughout performed at the same time, totalling £12,000.

The Interior

  • Reportedly all-original interior
  • All electrical equipment said to be in working order
  • Interior in overall excellent condition with only very minor signs of use
Climbing into this car, you’ll instantly note the no-expenses-spared mentality with the design and materials used in the interior. The touch-and-feel of the leather, the wood veneers and construction, plush carpets and upholstery, elegantly designed buttons, knobs, and instruments, are all within easy reach of the driver, and are of supreme quality for the time at which they were made.
The interior shows little signs of wear and tear, and it is complete and reportedly all-original. Notably, there is a crack on the passenger side front dashboard as pictured.
The headlining is in near-perfect condition. The door panels and interior trim are equally glorious.
The current owner also assures us that all of the electronics are in working order. All windows operate smoothly, including the centre divider which optionally separates the front and rear cabins, operated by a knob in the centre of the rear passenger area.
The seats are in excellent condition, with some signs of use seen which are not intrusive. The rear compartment provides two jump seats as pictured, which fold behind the centre divider nicely.
While there is no boot, an excellently made luggage box is present and in incredible condition.

The Exterior

  • Very straight body
  • “Spirit of Ecstasy” in near-perfect condition
  • exterior in overall excellent condition with only minor blemishes seen
  • Black and cream exterior perfectly suits the vehicle’s elegance
  • All brightwork still gleaming
The exterior of this Rolls is in above average condition for its age. While there are a couple of light scratches, some very light paint swirls here and there, and small marks from the road and typical use, these issues do not detract from the overall exquisite condition of this Phantom II.
The window glass is in great condition, rather tidy and with the small chips expected from normal use, but nothing larger than a small speck. The rear window shows some medium scratching as pictured.
The wiper trim, rubbers, and exterior seals are all intact and in great condition.
The headlight and taillight lenses are clear, and the indicator lenses show no hint of fogging or haziness.
The original wheels are absolutely stunning, with no hint of corrosion. The optional extra colour-matched spare wheels on both sides of the vehicle are all in excellent condition. The tyres still show plenty of tread as pictured.
The underside of the vehicle shows very little sign of any corrosion, it’s very clear the vehicle has been stored correctly, and kept very clean.

The Mechanics

  • 7.7L Pushrod-OHV inline-6 engine sounds smooth, refined, and is incredibly quiet as it should be
  • 4- speed gearbox shifts smoothly
  • Owner states it runs perfectly for a vehicle of its age
The generous straight-6 sprang to life with no hesitation, and quickly settled to an almost silent idle. The engine bay has little room for improvement visually, and the owner assures us that everything is in excellent working condition with no knowledge of any work that needs doing.
A previous owner has had the fuel pump changed to electric, providing a bit of extra usability to the vehicle.
There is a slight oil drip from the transmission, but the current owner is not bothered by it. They state that the steering, brakes, engine, drivetrain and running gear are performing as well as they should, and better than expected for the age.

Summary

When spoken, the name Rolls Royce evokes a vision of extreme elegance, and a no-expenses-spared level of luxury. This special Thrupp and Maberly Limousine is no exception to that notion, as the extra length provided in this long wheelbase version just adds to the eccentric notion of luxury it exudes. Everywhere one looks, they can sense the time and care put into providing the driver and passengers with the absolute maximum amount of comfort and enjoyment in operation.
The Phantom II’s robustly engineered design, use of high-quality materials, attention to detail, and clinical build quality are overly apparent and present in all aspects. This is an excellent opportunity to own a real surviving piece of motoring history, truly deserving of its nameplate.
