1929 Morgan Aero

Highlights

  • Water-cooled J.A.P. engine
  • Flamboyant bodywork
  • Excellent blue paintwork

The Appeal

Perhaps the closest you can get to riding a motorcycle without having to don leathers and a helmet, Morgan Three Wheelers offer exciting motoring and a completely different take on what a car should look like. This Aero has benefitted from a full restoration by a previous owner back in 2014. It is still very fresh and has had minimal use since.

A water-cooled J.A.P. V-twin engine coupled with extremely lightweight bodywork means that despite this Morgan's diminutive size it can still perform admirably at speed. There's nothing quite like jumping in, familiarising yourself with the hand throttle and listening to the thumping roar of those twin exhausts.

It comes with a large folio of paperwork which not only contains various invoices but also a handwritten account of the restoration and full instructions on its use. It comes with a handful of spares, extra paint and Morgan Three Wheeler Club Bulletins.

The History and Paperwork

  • Restored in 2014
  • Extensive Folio of invoices
  • Handwritten restoration notes
  • Handwritten instructions
  • Several Morgan Three Wheeler Club Bulletins
  • Current V5C
  • MOT and road tax exempt
  • Purchased in 2019, dry stored since then, and started occasionally

The previous owner undertook an extensive restoration back in 2014. Details of the project have been painstakingly recorded in the owner’s hand and are kept in a substantial folio. He has also included very useful instructions on how to care for the Morgan along with hand-drawn diagrams.

The folio also includes interesting copies of Morgan Three Wheeler Club Bulletins and invoices. This is a very valuable and interesting component of the car and would provide many hours of reading for the next owner.

The Interior

  • Simple open cockpit
  • Original controls and steering wheel
  • Refurbished seats
  • Original instrumentation

The cockpit of the Morgan is a very simple affair with just enough room for two occupants. The oak dashboard houses a handful of age and model-correct dials. The odometer reads zero so it is uncertain if it is in working order. The fit and finish to the simple layout is good and all levers and controls are fully connected.

Those unfamiliar with the controls of a Three Wheeler will have fun getting used to operation a hand throttle, mounted on the steering whee, alongside hand controls for the ignition timing and choke. There are only two pedals: a clutch and foot brake, which operates the front drums. The handbrake slows the rear wheel.

A pair of Brooklands aero screens provide just enough weather protection for the occupants and stout matting covers the floors. Otherwise, there are few nods to comfort or luxury to be found here.

The Exterior

  • Excellent blue paintwork
  • Flamboyant bodywork
  • Electric lighting
The small but beautifully formed body has been finished in a delightfully pale blue and has a good depth of shine. The wire wheels are finished in a contrasting red at the front and silver to the rear.

The radiator cowl is in lovely condition and is emblazoned with an original Morgan emblem. Spare paint is thoughtfully supplied with the car. All the light fittings are present on the vehicle except for the right-hand side light lens.

The Mechanics

  • Dry-sump V-twin J.A.P engine
  • Handwritten starting and driving instructions included
  • Magneto ignition - will run without a battery
The engine was not seen running but the present owner has insisted it runs well,  after having received some timing adjustments.

The Aero comes with replacement brake shoes and linings, as well as an original starting handle and a special spanner that fits various components.

The notes detail a considerable amount of work undertaken and suggest that the previous owner was not only a talented individual but had an eye for detail which is reassuring.

Summary

Here’s a rare opportunity to obtain a nicely restored and cared for example of a Morgan Three Wheeler. It is presented in excellent condition throughout and offers a thrilling driving experience.
