Highlights
- Impressive veteran car in highly original condition
- Single-cylinder 4-stroke engine
- Purchased from the Auto Moto Retro show in 2018
- Has spent four years in storage with no known mileage since
The Appeal
Built in Valentigney by Lion-Peugeot - the off-shoot brand that separated from Automobiles Peugeot due to a classic family dispute - the Type VC was an early motor car that sat comfortably amongst its peers, while not exactly being revolutionary. With a single-cylinder, 4-stroke engine providing 8hp of power to the engine, they perform with every bit of the character you’d expect of a true vintage.
This example, built in 1907, has been in storage for some four years, having been purchased as part of the Le Mans Auto Moto Retro Show in 2018. It’s not turned a wheel since, so will require a good service and inspection - but still makes for a highly impressive, venerable classic.
The History and Paperwork
- Sadly we know very little about the history of this car
- Built by Lion-Peugeot in 1907
- Previously restored with a fresh set of lanterns, new upholstery and bonnet
- Sold in 2018 at the Le Mans Auto Moto Retro Show
- Has spent four years in dry storage with no mileage undertaken
- Car comes with French registration certificate
- Sadly no other paperwork is available for the vehicle
The Interior
- Beautifully tactile period interior
- Metal ‘instruments’ mounted on a bare wooden baseboard
- Early period steering wheel with wood trim
As an ancestor to the modern automobile, it’s of no surprise that this Type VC has a very scant, very tactile interior. There’s not a significant amount of interior to properly speak of - what’s here is certainly in good condition, but the car will need to be serviced before we can speak authoritatively of its running condition.
The car’s black upholstery is in fine condition, having been replaced relatively recently in the car’s life. There are no rips or tears, but there is a storage-commensurate patina and wear, particularly carrying generous doses of dust and the odd scuff to the quilted buttons.
The floors are in good order, the dash looks solid and the period steering wheel is particularly charming. The brass, tactile instruments and squeeze-bulb horn completes the car’s distinctive character.
The Exterior
- Highly impressive period car with Lion-Peugeot branding, lanterns and paintwork
- Green paintwork with hand painted yellow coachlines
- Yellow ‘wagon’ wheels with green lining
With its angular shape, outsized fenders and smatterings of brasswork, this Type VC is practically the definition of a vintage car. No smooth, compact bodywork, no plastics, and no chrome - this is a veteran car that would have once been a fairly ordinary looker. Now, it’s an exceptional curiosity.
The paintwork is in good order, with wear in line with its long life in storage. The brass work, similarly, has gained some patina. The lantern lenses appear to be broken, and will need replacement, but the lanterns themselves are still in good order.
The ‘wagon’ wheels are in good order, with Lion-Peugeot branding, and the beautifully lined paintwork is in fair order, saving a good dose of patina from the car’s life in storage. The Waymaster Cord tyres have plenty of tread, but do look a little deflated.
Underneath, the car’s wooden floor looks in great order, with the metalwork in good condition and the chain-drive appearing to be in fine order, too. The springs look clean, the exhaust is nicely presented, and we ultimately can’t see faults outside of age-commensurate patina.
We haven’t seen the black soft-top unfolded
The Mechanics
- Single-cylinder 4-stroke engine
- Impressive visual condition
- In need of a service
Having been stood static for some years, this Type VC is awaiting a service before it can return to the roads. However, the engine is in good order with the compact single-cylinder motor carrying only slight patina and wear.
The car’s mechanical order is practically unchanged, with all of its simple, venerable mechanics in situ and carrying no known modifications.
Summary
Highly presented, and ready and waiting to be reawakened, this early treasure is sure to impress any enthusiast. It’s rare that we see cars of such vintage in a condition like this one, and we’ve no doubt it’ll be the gem in the crown of any garage.
