The Carriage
Marking a significant chapter in the development of four-wheeled transport, you can see how closely this turn-of-the-century horse-drawn carriage resembles the very first motor cars. Complete with a ‘pram’ hood and ‘dashboard,’ it’s almost exactly like those contraptions lined up for the start of the London to Brighton Run, minus the engine, of course.
This carriage was built during the late nineteenth/early twentieth century by the pre-eminent American manufacturer Emerson Brantingham, renowned for its early tractors and agricultural equipment. It would have been exceedingly expensive in its day, offering the very latest in comfort and usability. A testament to its quality, this carriage remains in full working order and survives thanks to a comprehensive restoration carried out approximately 45 years ago. It’s been dry-stored ever since.
The vendor remarks:
“This iconic American carriage style resembles the one in the famous movie picture ‘Gone with the Wind’, fully restored ready for use from film work or just a lovely talking point in the right setting.”
