1991 Jaguar XJS 4.0

Highlights

  • Extensive main dealer service history
  • Completely original interior
  • Low mileage in recent years
  • Excellent paintwork

The Appeal

Originally powered by the same V12 engine as used in the E-Type, the XJS was refreshed in 1991 giving it a more recent – and more popular at the time – inline-six power-plant among other styling upgrades.

This particular Jaguar XJS is among the first to benefit from these changes brought in during Jaguar’s era of Ford ownership. The exterior is near-enough immaculate having been resprayed in a gorgeous Kingfisher Blue that is sure to turn heads.

History and Paperwork

  • Full service and MoT history
  • Personalised registration plate included in the sale
  • Repainted by Jaguar approved bodyshop
  • MoT until June 2023

The Interior

  • Totally original trim in very good condition
  • Aftermarket Clifford alarm fitted
  • Very attractive doeskin interior spec
As with most large Jaguars, the XJS’ interior has to be an excellent place to be with numerous electric gadgets placing it well ahead of its time. One particular accessory added during the car’s life is a Clifford security alarm system. According to the owner, all the interior features are in fully working order.

Throughout the interior, you’ll find plush tan doeskin leather covering the seats, dashboard and door cards. This is complemented perfectly with wood trim along the dashboard, centre console and on the doors.

All in all, the interior specification is to die for and thanks to owners that have looked after this particular model, it’s all in good condition. The driver’s seat is slightly more worn than the other three and the rocker panels obviously have a few scuff marks.

The Exterior

  • Vehicle was resprayed by a Jaguar Factory Approved bodyshop
  • More attractive facelift version with shorter buttresses
  • Excellent Kingfisher Blue colour
Just like the interior, the outside of the car has been thoroughly loved making it an exemplary model. The car was resprayed by a Jaguar approved shop some years ago in the same Kingfisher Blue paint in which it was originally painted. The paintwork features an intricate pinstripe running down the side of the car blending in very well with the gorgeous blue colour.

Aside from the paint, this car also has very well-preserved chrome trim including the bumpers and badges. There don’t appear to be any signs of damage throughout the exterior except for a single chip on one of the alloys and the headlights look perfectly clear.

The owner does say that the tyres will need replacing soon.

The Mechanics

  • Four-litre inline-six engine
  • Four-speed ZF automatic transmission
  • Seepage from the power steering
  • Front brake calliper operating system replaced
Forgoing the larger V12, this Jaguar XJS makes do with the perfectly adequate straight-six engine which put out 219hp when new. Connected to a four-speed auto transmission, this car must be as relaxing as driving a sofa.

According to the owner, the powertrain runs without issues although the MoT paperwork does report some seepage from the power steering system. Elsewhere, the front brake calliper operating system has been replaced.

Summary

An exemplary model both visually and mechanically, this Jaguar XJS would be an ideal classic car to jump in and drive with ease. Furthermore, with simple servicing and attention, there’s no reason for it to not keep running as healthily as it has done for the past 31 years.
